Not really sure if this was thread worthy and my opinion depends on what the hell we gave up, but on the surface this move is a bit puzzling

Not puzzling; MLB teams need three MLB outfielders to play MLB games.

Plus, it makes someone else expendable or endable.

I mentioned it on the hypo trade thread.

It doesn't make much sense to me.

Why trade for a soon to be 35yr old OF'er on the decline?

Verdugo, Ref and Duran are good enough there considering this team is not going anywhere this season.

I meant in the sense they’re acquiring a 34 year old outfielder, after trading their starting catcher. It’s a bit odd

The best way to look at it is that they traded a catcher who was headed to FA for an outfielder they have under contract for 2023. And Pham is an average regular in the OF which would make him prime Jim Rice by 2022 Red Sox OF standards. We will see what the prospect prices were in each of the deals.

I feel for Vasquez - he clearly loved being a Red Sox and it is hard not to have a soft spot for a starter who was nothing but solid.

My point is, maybe one of them is "good enough" for a contender to trade for; Verdugo is a proven postseason performer, for instance. Duran can run fast...

Feel for him??!!

He went from a cellar dweller to a 1st place team with legit shot to win the WS.....

At least Sox two great individuals in Pham and McGuire. One punches people over fantasy football and the other has been arrested for publicly masturbating

My first impression is this deal sucks.

They have those 'intangibles' ... It's basically a slap in the fans' faces. The RS decide to put a garbage team out there, and then, rather than get anyone the fans could support or respect, includes a couple of embarrassing scumbags. How could anyone root for these guys or a team that makes an effort to acquire them?

Yup

It’s a slap in the face all right. I hope the fans respond by boycotting some games.

This acquisition is indefensible.

But I will bet you any amount you want that it WILL be defended, and by posters here.

I’m sure they’ll beat it to death.

I fully expect the Red Sox to fix things and turn the team around next year. We can argue all day in what that entails. Firing bloom? Trusting blooms process? Whatever. But if you’re upset at selling off expiring contracts then you’d have been the people who died on the titanic. Wake up and smell the coffee.
