2 college championships, including a 60 game win streak for a largely unknown college basketball program.

Olympic Gold Medal winner.

11 NBA championships in 13 seasons.

My math is bad, but I count 14 championships in 15 seasons!

No one will ever do that again.

He may not ever be called the best ever, but he surely was the winningest player ever.

Loved his work ethic, unselfishness and intelligence.

11 NBA championships in 13 yrs, but he was hurt in one of those years the Celtics didn’t win, so he really only lost 1 year in the NBA. He should have his #6 retired by the NBA just like Jackie Robinson in baseball.

He had 2 California state high school titles as well; one of his high school teammates was Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson.

I never heard that.

What a champion!

I grew up watching Bill Russell and the Celtics play when they were on. Most regular season games I had a radio stuck to my ear. "Go Up For Glory" was one of my favorite reads. He was certainly the greatest champion of all time. Giving anyone the label as the best ever is always debatable. We all have gotten caught up in these types of discussions for sure. What I've said is if you had a chance to build your own team, who would your first pick be? A tall, lanky, shot blocking, greyhound in the middle would be very tough to beat. Not to mention the fact that the only statistic that mattered to him was the one hanging off the scoreboard at the end of the game. To win every game was always his goal. My absolute favorite all time bb player. With his passing, a part of my youth takes a shot.

The picture the other day with him and Frank standing together was a good one.
