Dalbec is just one example, but this season every time I watch the Sox play the Rays, the Rays just seem more professional in the field, on the base paths, on the mound, and in the batter's box.

As long as we're wishing, I wish they had kept Schwarber.

I said that from the start. Schwarber is a professional hitter and he does a lot for the lineup. He could have played LF and Dugo could have played right.

I would like to see Dalbec sent to AAA for the rest of the season. He needs to learn how to hit. Bello needs to go back down also.

"How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Fenway?"

Bello will be optioned out tomorrow when the Sox activate Sale. Kid needs to work on those secondary pitches big time.

Dalbec would be sent down if they had a viable first base option, but with Casas out since sometime in May, they really don’t.

Imo 1B is the top priority before the trade deadline. Dalbec had his chance.

I've never wanted anyone DFA'd over one game, and I've suggested Diekman be DFA'd days and maybe weeks ago, but I'm done with that guy.

I know we have a bunch of guys on the IL, but when one of these guys return, Diekman has to go. The sooner, the better.

I was dead wrong on him, last deadline and last winter.

Kind of late now. I said they should have signed Rizzo last trading deadline, before the Yankees got him, and the Sox ended up with Schwarber who was hurt, and not a real 1B, but you was against it. Wow!

The Sox sure know how to make the rays look like murderers row while the yankees make them look like chumps. Crazy how that works out.

Just went back and watched Dalbec drop the pop up. Pathetic effort.

I can’t remember a time when there has been so many dropped, or misplayed pop ups, or bad throws by pitchers, and infielders, and not just the Sox, but other teams as well. Kind of like some are still in Little League.

Rizzo's had a good career and can still hit/field at age 32, but the one caveat you have to make about a lefty batter going to the Yankees is that short porch in right field. Right field in Fenway is deep except at the Pesky Pole.

Looking back, Rizzo and Schwarber--both lefty bats--would have been good choices. However, we don't know what considerations went into not picking them. My guess is the hope that Dalbec could hit.

Also interesting is that Rizzo and Schwarber currently have the same WAR, +1.7. The one pricey acquisition Bloom did make was for Story, whose WAR is +2.3.

Rizzo is not only a real 1B, but a good one at that. I think the Yankees swooped in, and took Rizzo right out from underneath Bloom’s nose, and he took Schwarber who was leftover.

I think I did what I often criticize others for doing: reading too much into recent stats.

Rizzo 2014-2019 (per 162 games)

.284 32 105 (70 XBHs and .901 OPS)

Rizzo 2020-2021 (including time with NYY)

.240 27 69 (53 XBH and .775 OPS)

While 819 PAs seems like a large enough sample size, it often is misleading.

I'm not sure anyone projected these numbers for 2022 (per 162 games)

.281 39 94 (65 XBHs and .827 OPS)

but it's not really all that extreme a jump, even at age 32 and about to be 33.

Schwarbs was and is a significantly better hitter at this point in their careers.

The issue was more about 1B than OF/DH, but as it turned out, Dalbec remained on fire through AUG and into SEP.

It’s not a question of who’s the best hitter, but that Rizzo is a good 1B, which Franchy Strange Glove, and Bobby Strange Glove are not, and that is a big need of the Red Sox at the moment.

I'm not sure it's really a "big need", compared to our pitching needs.

Well we’ll have to disagree that 1B isn’t a big need on this club. The pitching hopefully just needs to get healthy, but the only cure to fix 1B is to get a good 1B.

I'm not sure I have ever said pitching is not our highest priority- ever!

I think the return of Whitlock, Nate, Wacha Sale, Nate, Hill, Taylor and maybe even Danish, Barnes, Seabold plus the introduction of Paxton to the staff might be enough or near enough to drop pitching to the #2 slot on the highest need list.

They don't even need a "good" one.

Per BTV:

Sox Trade Jeter Downs and Nick Decker

Rockies trade CJ Cron 131 wRC+, 2.1 fWAR, 4 DRS

How about one who can catch the dam ball.
