Starting Monday (June 20), teams will be limited to 13 active pitchers. Red Sox are currently at 14. Who is going?

My guesses are Robles either to the DL or DFAd, or Sawamura optioned.

I'd say 99% on one of those two happening. Since a Sawamura option keeps all the cards on the table, I'd vote for that choice, even though I like Sawamura more than Barnes and Robles.

Outside chance we trade someone- maybe equal salary dumps- like a scrub RP'er for a scrub OF'er who bats RH'd. (Not sure when Kike is due back.)

Danish will get demoted.

Teams will option a player before any trade/DFA as this limit doesn’t affect 40 man rosters and every team has at least one pitcher with options…

We already have a scrub OF that bats right-handed. He’s playing well right now, too…

It wouldn't hurt to have someone else (with options remaining), in case refsnyder proves to be a flash, of Cordero returns to his 2021 level.

I honestly don't think paring our lousy bullpen from 14 to 13 is worthy of its own thread.

LOL.

Choosing the worst of worst is so much fun, though!

Actually, we won't be choosing the worst: we'll be choosing one with options remaining.

Have you seen some of the other threads around here. This is pertinent as it's actually something that is happening today. Rather than getting buried in a 200 page thread, I'm fine with it.

I'm on pins and needles!

What time is the deadline for announcing the roster moves?

They'll drag it out until closer to game time most likely.

In case he turns out to be a flash?!? How do I break this to you?

He already is one, and it’s been a good thing so far. But yea, it will end. And probably very suddenly and without warning.

But that doesn’t mean some other scrub is necessary. The new guy would probably never even give us a flash…

Resisting the urge to go back to 2015 to find some positive jacko ramblings about Refsnyder...

Two Jeter Downs thoughts:

1) It's expected to be a very short stint with Arroyo and Kiké both nearing activation.

2) MLB rules dictate teams had to get to 13 pitchers and 13 position players today. So Red Sox had to cut a pitcher (Norwood DFA).

I tend to agree. Fair or not, it's usually about who has options.

For all of the hand-wringing about our bullpen, our bullpen situation is not nearly as dire as many people make it out to be. Yes, we need some reinforcement, but it is not a dire situation.

3) Sox are showcasing him as trade bait.

4) Hope they can borrow the old Jeter Cam from Fox to follow him around the dugout for reactions of every single play, call, throw, swing, foul, fowl, chicks in the stands, etc. etc. for the entire game he's up...

Refsnyder had a .325 OBP in 157 PA's for Minny last year.

Could be a nice little scrap heap pickup by Bloom.

He's been holding his own.

A right handed outfielder is the one area that I thought we should have strengthened in the offseason, but so far it's been okay.

He'll be only up for a few games most likely. Hard to show case a guy who only is hitting 125 since May 5th.

I certainly know he won't stay at .943, but it's not outlandish to think he might provide more than just a flash as a RH'd platoon for the remainder of 2020.

The 5 Sox starters' (Pivetta, Eovaldi, Wacha, Hill, and Whitlock) combined WAR totals +6.1. The relievers combined WAR (including plusses and minuses) is +1.7. And don't forget, the starters normally have to face opposing hitters at least twice in a game. Relievers usually (Houck has been an exception) don't.

Then, as Old Red likes to remind me, there's the little matter of 14 saves out of 28 save opportunities. Almost laughable is that in the two wins vs. the Cardinals, there were no blown saves even though the Cardinals scored 4 runs in the 9th (to get the score to 6-5 with 2 on and 2 out before that final out) in one win and 3 in the 9th (final score 6-4) in the other win.

Maybe my "lousy" is short of your "dire," but my opinion, which ain't worth much, is that Alex Cora is on his way to some pretty important decorations (see Slim Pickens in Dr Strangelove) for bravery.

It's absolutely about options--and salaries.

A higher WAR is directly related to more IP.

What's probably surprising to some are these numbers.

OPS Against

.665 Pen

.677 SP

Unearner or ghost runners allowed

16 pen in 260 IP

11 SP in 339 IP

So they traded for Norwood to DFA him without him ever even seeing the field? Wtf

Look at those two IP numbers (260 for the bullpen and 339 for the starters) and then compare them to the combined WAR's of bullpen (+1.7) and rotation (+6.1). They are not proportional. Plus, as I said, relievers don't go through lineups 2 or 3 times like starters do.

Then why deal Arroyo for another hopeful?

Looking at Refsnyder’s career, it’s filled with minor league decency and MLB limited opportunities. Any RHH OF you can get for Arroyo is more likely to be a step down than a step up…

Not to mention his 40 man out of options status was hopefully not surprising, and the Sox had to know about the 13 man pitcher deadline today.

Not sure why they didn’t simply demote Danish, who has an option and seems to be more problem than solution with this bullpen…
