I think of the 2004 ALCS as the greatest comeback in baseball history. Brown may have gotten the apple a bit in Game 7 , but I think saying the Yanks choked detracts from the Sox accomplishment. I stay away from that.

2004 will always be the greatest comeback of all time to me! It is amazing how that team never gave up and that 1 hitter was so clutch! Never get tired of watching that series.

After so many seasons of intense heartache, it was so fitting to win that way.

Amen brother!

Maybe next year was the recurrent theme throughout New England.

To me 1946 was really tough. Watching Williams walk on a balls an inch off the plate rather than try to get runners home by swinging at pitches a little off the plate. That was tough.

Would this be a crazy idea for 2023:

1b: Casas

2b: Story

SS: C.Koss (great glove)

3b: Bogaerts (resign)

C: Wong

LF: Verdugo

CF: Duran

RF: ???

DH: Devers

OR

1b: Casas

2b: Story

SS: Koss

3b: Devers

C: Wong

LF: Verdugo

CF: Duran

RF: Judge

DH: Cordero

I'm into this idea of making C.Koss the starting SS next year. I know, his bat is problematic, but his glove is first rate and the Red Sox need to adapt to the end of the shifts with a more athletic SS. I like T.Story at 2b. Koss and Story = great middle defense. The big question: should the Red Sox pursue Bogaerts or Judge in free agency? They are the same age basically. I guess it depends on how much more money Judge wants over Bogaerts, but Judge fills a big hole for the Red Sox in RF and Devers might not want to move off 3b

The other option:

1b: Devers (move to 1b?) Casas gets another year in AAA, which might be good for his development

2b: Story

SS: C.Koss (great glove)

3b: Bogaerts (resign)

C: Wong

LF: Verdugo

CF: Duran

RF: ???

DH: Cordero

The problem with moving Story to SS: the Red Sox will have a hole at 2b. Arroyo sucks, and Jeter Downs is a huge disappointment. Who else is there? I would rather keep Story at 2b and bring up a quality glove at SS in C.Koss.

Grateral - Who looked at the Medicals for Bloom, Mickey Mouse?

Since you posted this, Graterol has given up 6 runs in 2 innings. Priceless!

So the current RF are “losers” but Koss for SS?

Koss will very likely never hit as well as Bradley.

Your logic for playing Story and Koss at 2b/SS respectively is a big stretch…

Koss also has a 27% k rate in AA (not bad) with a 2% bb rate (horrible). He's a UTIL player, not a starting SS.

Also, Duran's glove is putrid. I'm not sure you want to pencil him in for CF for 150 games.

Also, the idea that you'd move to Devers to 1b for one year (after he is having a really solid year at 3b) to keep Casas down is silly.

Devers wouldn't even DH yesterday; he insisted on playing third -- that's why the DH was Duran (who I still have not observed on actual plays as anything less than an average outfielder).

Duran’s glove is weak but he does add some excitement to the offense. But if you ask me, his most likely contribution will involve being traded for a catcher…

Well I'm glad your eyes are much better than actual scouts that don't want him to play CF.

The irony is how the infield was re-arranged to accommodate Koss over Casas.

(I’ve never heard Koss’ glove to be anything more than above average. He’s not a guy you move 3 sluggers to squeeze into the lineup.)

I have for the longest time thought Devers would play gold glove quality defense at 3rd base since the vast majority of his errors were throwing errors caused by hurrying his throws. For what it's worth I agree that Duran is not a centerfielder. I think he could play an adequate 2nd base however.

I'd put him in LF. I also advocated for opening a spot on the roster for him by trading Verdugo in the offseason as I thought Verdugo was one of the few guys that had some trade value (age, contract, etc).

They moved him off position to make use of his speed. Instead of admitting their error and moving him back, they are just keeping him in the OF.

He has a more advanced SS glove than the other guys in the system, but it's not saying much. I guess Downs has looked better there this season too.

For some reason the Red Sox under Bloom love to move players out of their natural positions. It remains to be seen how effective that strategy is over the long term.

This happened under Dombrowski. He was drafted and announced as an OFer even though all his college reps were in the IF.

He could probably be a passable OF in, say, Petco where LF is pretty expansive and speed is helpful across the board. Not to mention the dearth of actual outfielders in San Diego where the new philosophy appears to be “Just get lots and lots of shortstops and play them everywhere!!”

My bad ! If Bogey fails to re-sign and Story moves to short then we may see Duran at 2nd.

The problem is that his range sucks because he can't track a flyball for s***.

Downs? He can’t hit 200 in Worcester, and strikes out more than Story, so how do you think he could hit in Boston?

I never said anything about scouts. I'm only basing my opinion of what I've actually seen of Duran in Red Sox or Worcester games.

But I admit I'm old timey when it comes to using my eyes. Sometimes using the GPS, I'll look out the window and see the location; my wife gets really confused when I say we're already there, even when the computer voice on her phone tells her we're not. The inhumanity, the inanity...

So you’re saying Duran is more likely to play 2b than Downs?

Also, BA for minor leaguers can be misleading depending on what the team is doing with them. I have no idea if the Sox are using any approach with Downs, but sometimes I believe teams will want a player to work on hitting breaking stuff, so he will be told not to swing at fastballs.

If something like this is going on with Downs, his numbers can be moot…
