There wasn't a whole lot of risk in trading for Manaea, though.

No.

The only thing is - how do we know they didn’t try? Might have tried for Montas, too. But maybe Oakland just doesn’t like our prospects…

Or Chris Bassitt or Kyle Gibson, who both had shutout starts yesterday...

We also didn’t have the MLB-ready top 100 pitching prospect that it took to acquire Kyle Gibson last year…

I’m not asking for any big FA contract, but just something out of the bargain basement would be nice, or a trade for someone young like Pivetta was in a trade.

The Sox lost 29yo Eduardo Rodriguez to free agency after a season in which he threw 157 IP with a 4.74 ERA.

They replaced him with 42yo Rich Hill, who threw 158 IP with a 3.84 ERA. But because Hill is older, this is considered “bargain basement” and a downgrade. Right?

I mean, it’s certainly not because Hill outpitched ERod last year…

I went back, and forth on resigning ERod, but I think he wanted out of Boston anyway. It would just be better if we got someone good enough to stick around more than a year.

Hill eclipsed 137IP for the second time in his career last year. Last time he eclipsed that number was 2007. His FIP was 4.34. ERod’s FIP last year was 3.32. ERod is 13 years his junior and was victimized by an absurd .364 BABIP. The idea that Hill will outpitch ERod this year is pretty low likelihood

But if you can’t find an acceptable multi year deal for a desirable pitcher, what’s wrong with one year deals for pitchers with pretty damn solid track records?

Hill has certainly shown he can miss time, but if he stays healthy, he’s more “bargain” than “basement”…

Over the last 4 years, ERod has pitched 104 IP more than Hill (628 to 524), had a worse ERA and ERA+, but had a better FIP.

Of course, he also costs nearly 4 times as much. For one season, Hill is very capable of replacing ERod quite successfully in the rotation and also increases any chance of extending Devers and/or Bogaerts…

Pivetta was fortunate to do as well as he did. They were getting some good swings off of him. Quite a few hard hit outs. At this very early stage , it is obvious that Boone has a lot more faith in his bullpen than Cora has in his.

Pivetta’s pitch count was very low and the bullpen was used a lot the day before. I can see why he did it…

The Yankees--fans and team--entirely agree with you and promise never again to score runs on on Pivetta's 3d time through their lineup.

I do agree it's a tough call--3d time through the lineup vs. a bullpen that scares no one.

But can he keep us out of it?

I was never sold on ERod, but Detroit was -- moving fast to sign him. And losing a fairly reliable rotation starter under 30 and replacing him with 40-somethings for the next half decade doesn't sound like the mark of a team all-in. You yourself just posted you wished Bloom had invested in more pitching this winter; I assume you didn't mean more affordable guys with looming best-buy dates.
