Koji had been kind of a well kept secret. He always had the stuff to be top of the line. Anyway , he certainly was that in 2013. That is my whole point , the championship seasons all had a top of the line closer .

I'm not sure that anyone is arguing about having a top closer. My argument is always against spending big for a closer.

Average pen. Not bad, average.

It would be will above average if the Sox were able to keep Houck and Whitlock in it.

Maybe. That’s not our reality at this point.

Well it might be with one call up.

Of course even keeping just one in the bullpen would be a significant improvement, especially if Robles can keep it up.

And Josh Taylor is on a rehab assignment, and hopefully can get back to his old effective self soon enough…

It will be interesting to see what the pen looks like after rosters are reduced to 26.

They did extend the deadline on allowing 14 pitchers until May 29th, so my guess is we use that.

That is great if you can do it. It's possible, but not too easy. The Josh Haders are usually going to cost more than the Diekmans. There is a reason for that.

But if we follow the mold of 4 rings and 4 lights out closers, we could find the next Uehara or Papelbon and maybe not pay bigly for the next Foulke or Kimbrel.

Like I said , it's possible.

I think he might be Houck (or Whitlock.)

... or someone actually available. The Red Sox better settle on someone else before their next trip to Canada, because the road to the postseason may go through Toronto. The Blue Jays lead the majors in home runs, with Teoscar Hernandez on the IL.

Or maybe just tell Tanner Houck to get vaccinated. It’s not like it’s a major procedure. The whole process take 90 seconds, 85 of which are spent filling out forms…

... do you mean, less time than it takes to get needles full of non-medicinal ink jabbed up and down your arms, neck, shoulders, chest and back?

They can't force him. It's crazy, but that's the way it is. They were able to force Story, though, by making it a condition of his signing.

Frail isn’t vaxed either.

I bet if Bloom slips his tattoo artist a couple Bennies, he could slip some vaccine into that ink…

They can’t force him, but they can

1. Pay him

2. Dupe him

Hit him with a blow dart.

Or a plane ticket to Colorado... BTV accepted this: Houck to the Rockies for starting pitchers Gomber and Senzatela, relievers Lawrence and Kinley, outfielder/first baseman Connor Joe, and catching prospect Drew Romo.

Anyone who can pitch at Mile High is worth giving a look, and Joe can hit, but the gem is the future hotshot backstop. Now why wouldn't the Rox do this?

ps. of course it's a ridiculous proposal, but don't think for a second that Bloom doesn't know Houck's trade value in returns, as well as current and future effects on team unity (at least on screen).

Houck for a hodgepodge of 6 prospects. I like crazy ideas like that.

Updated. The starters are catching up.

Kinda like the Beni trade.

Beni was more important to the team because he danced after they won and was a team player.

Didn’t we get prospects?

Yes. Winckowski was one of them. Hopefully it works out. Beni has been playing well since the last month or two of 2021.
