After losing out on Freddie Freeman, Red Sox are taking a look at Trevor Story. One catch: he would likely have to play 2B as 2-time WS champ Xander Bogaerts is the SS. Other possible options for Story: Cards, Twins, Astros, more.

If Story goes to the Cardinals, trade for Paul DeJong. He’s basically Story, but $20mill cheaper…

You don’t sign a good D SS to an enormous deal and move him to 2b where he hasn’t played before.

 

You know, I was saying that just the other day to A-Rod…

Think like Bloom. Story provides more price stability, especially since there’s more risk. Story is the better defender as well, so you’d have some level of upgrade. Also, Story and Bogey were nearly identical with WAR for 19-20. With Bogey’s opt out after 22 and the Sox really not making any major moves and sticking with the plan, is Bogey even likely to make a major impact?

 

For Bloom, I expected him to deal Bogaerts if there was a normal off-season. If they sign Story, I reinstate that thought

But if the Sox really are punting this season why not trade Eovaldi, JDM and Kike too?

They punted 2 years ago. Then seemingly punted last offseason. It’s no longer punting if it happens again.

Agreed, you either trade Bogey or move Bogey to 2B.

 

(BTW, when the Yanks got ARod, they should have moved Jeter not ARod off SS.)

I agreed with this premise then and agree with it now. Maximize your team's best attributes.

It was weird that Nomar was going to move off SS for Arod, then the deal fell through, and although Nomar was no stellar defender at SS, nobody was as bad as Jeter.

My recollection is that they also had a deal lined up to trade Nomar for Magglio Ordonez.

On the Story front, MLBTR does paint a picture with Boston as a legitimate candidate to sign him.

 

Of course, they need to be in the right financial ballpark first…

I have seen both Story and Bogaerts state that 2B is not an option for them. That settles that business. If we could still be using heavy shifts, then put both of them on the same side and tell them they are the SS, just realigned.

Per the latest article on MLBTR, Story is open to changing position short term. They also cite he wants a “win now” team. San Francisco and Minnesota are also in the running let the article. Seattle seems to have settled their infield issues…

I thought Lester was going to be with Manny in the trade for A-Rod.

 

Who would have thought what a blessing it was that trade fell through?

 

It ended up the Red Sox only had to pay an additional $12 million, and they passed.

 

It was fate.

The important point is in that series of trades, we would have lost Jon Lester.

 

Now the Sox are supposed to get Brandon McCarthy, which would have been a minute compensation at best…
