Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

Psycho is overrated. Jaws is underrated. The sequels to both were unwatchable…

PSYCHO was iconic. It changed everything in the thriller/horror movie genre. Overrated? IMHO, no way.

The sequels to both, like you posted, were terrible.

The funny thing is about this trade is that Renfroe would have been the Sox best outfielder this year and that's with missing 30 games

Based on WAR, this trade has cost us 2 or 3 wins so far.

Posted
It might be 3 or 4 if we factor in our other right fielders. 3 or 4 is a lot, really.

Renfroe WAR is 2.1 and JBJ is -.1 Might be fairer to say it cost us 2-3 wins, which is still significant when you consider how close we are to a wild card spot.

I have a hard time factoring in other right-fielders because that's also a function of Kike getting hurt.

3, or 4 could be really big. Remember we only made the post season by 1 game last year. A legit 1B could have added a few more wins.

How many games did the Brewers lose when he was out hurt?

My gut test says maybe 1-2.

Maybe the fairest comparison would be Red Sox WAR for RF vs. Brewers WAR for RF.

The good ol’ completely unquantifiable eye test?

My Q...

How many Brewer games did Sox fans watch?

What exactly does "the eye test" mean, in this case. Eyeing the stats?

It means watching some games the Red Sox lost and Bradley stunk, and in the middle of that, someone mentions that Renfroe just hit another homer.

So, that's the "eye test." Looking at box scores and HR/RBI totals- none of those damn defensive metrics.

Are you trying to defend the Renfroe for Bradley + prospects trade? I thought you were against it.

No. I hated the trade from day one and still do. I am awaiting the results of the prospects for the final grade, but the trade will likely be a complete failure.

My point is using the term "eye test," when you likely are just looking box scores and HR and RBI totals off the internet and not actually watching enough Brewer games to be able to say "eye test" with any kind of straight face.

I know it's just a term used, and I'll probably be accused of nit-picking, but to me, the term eye test means personal observations, either live or on TV, and a big enough attentive sample size to count.

If you really need any kind of metrics to tell you what’s going on then you probably don’t know what’s going on anyway, but then again not everyone has the same needs.

The most important eye test is always a look at the standings of the clubs. That is what matters. If you are in last place , what does it matter what your fwar may be ?You can look at pages and pages of stats until your head spins , but the standings are still the bottom line. Of course it is always more fun to watch a ball game than to spend the time on a nerd baseball website.

So you are dismissing what is collectively known as moonslop?

Go to the ballpark or watch the game on tv . Watch a Little League game if you want . Have a beer and a hot dog . You are supposed to be enjoying it all. Don't spend so much time trying to analyze everything. Or you can spend hours on fangraphs and find out that a guy has a 3.5 fwar so he is .7 better than the guy with the 2.8 fwar. Whatever that is supposed to mean . You can enjoy the game and applaud a guy making a great play or you can skip the game and spend your time looking up the UZR ratings. Your choice.

It doesn't have to be an either or choice.

One can fully enjoy watching baseball live or on TV and also enjoy exploring data. Really. It's true!

The sad part is that some would be lost now if the analytics was taken away from them. They would be lost, and wouldn’t know what to do anymore. Sad movies it would be.

What would you do without WAR? Trust the MVP voters who actually watched guys play 40 or 50 years ago?

They watched every player play every game? Nope. They waited for the Sunday paper, looked at the HR and BA leaders and trusted only that.

How about before TV? How did that work out?

(They once voted a GG to a player who did not even play the position, that year. LOL!)

Let’s get back to when Real Men with Real Beards ran the Red Sox while they Chewed Tobacco and Raw Steel and randomly Capitalized Letters in the Middle of Sentences !!

And the team also went 86 years without a title!!

The really stupid part of the anti-metric cord is they still cling to metrics but they pretend they don’t…

These nerds(Bloom), and co haven’t won either. I don’t think JH sits with a analytics sheet. I’m talking about the baseball operations people. Nerds, and clones led by Bloom.
