Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

It probably won’t be JBJ.

He was brought in to improve outfield defense, and he has done that. They probably didn’t expect him to hit all that much, and he’s done that too.

Duran should stay. But unlike Bradley and Hernandez, he has options. And demoting him allows the Sox to keep everyone.

My choice would be Kike to 1b, Duran in CF, Bradley/Refsnyder in RF and Dalbec (who also has options) to Worcester.

If the Sox release JBJ, and an OF gets hurt, who starts then?

The Red Sox are not going to release JBJ, and Kike wasn’t doing much with the bat before he got hurt anyway, so he should have to fight for a spot too when he comes back.

Yes and because Kiké isn't under contract next season.

You can't even live with him hitting 230 because he doesn't hit for power anymore

I think a .600 OPS is the new Mendoza line.

JBJ is at .555.

If JBJ could hit on the road like he hits at Fenway it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.

If JBJ could be a relief pitcher, then we could stop worrying about way more important Red Sox things than his bat.

Oh wait…

Some basic math about JBJ.

There are 30 MLB teams and more than 30 X 25 = 750 players on the active rosters.

Fangraphs assesses JBJ as having an fWAR of -.5.

But what gets interesting is that they rank him as the 1217th best player in MLB this season. Loosely translated, that means JBJ should be a part-time, late inning sub or something.

Instead, he's ranked freaking 7th on the Sox in at bats.

We are almost halfway through the season, and it is unquestionable that JBJ has hurt the Sox this year.

And the Sox are paying him $8M--basically, to prevent the Sox from winning.

No, my real point is that so far--and we are almost halfway through the season--it is unquestionable that JBJ has hurt the Sox this year. And the Sox are paying him $8M.

To me, the worst part of the trade and contract is yet to come: the $8M buyout for 2023!!!

$12M salary for 2023. Ouch!!!

The $4M differential might mean he’s back, next year.

If things continue like this, I think they might just eat the $8 mill, which is already factored into the tax numbers.

Who is going to take his place?

We got bumpkus in the high minors. (Ps: I would be happy to see granberg get a chance. Huge hit tool.)

The real question is can we get a better all around free agent or traded player for less than the 4 million difference?

MLB being what it is, few of you will be surprised that, when I looked at JBJ's game log, I found that the Sox are 37-31 in the 68 games in which he has played. :(

Wonder what it could be with a better bat in place of him........

Good question. The Sox are 43-33 overall, so in the other 8 games they are 6-2.

Apparently my comment in the other thread about JBJ that kicked off an entire discussion should have been made in this thread. I've just kind of picked that thread to post random thoughts, I'll do better.

Jackie Bradley sucks at baseball. More specifically, he sucks at hitting. Bradley is a fourth outfielder and nothing more than that. Yet, the Red Sox are paying him a fortune and have made him a starting OF.

Maybe no one wanted Renfroe, but you would think he would have a little more value, especially with the DH expanding to the NL. It looks like Renfroe hurts you in the field, but he can do some damage with the bat.

Jackie Bradley is a 4th OF and Binelas is a shaky prospect. Binelas has power but to what extent will it translate at the higher levels? And Binelas can't really do anything else--he sucks defensively.

As bad as Bradley is, Dalbec is an even worse player. Dalbec doesn't do anything well. At least Bradley can play defense.

I would keep Bradley over Dalbec.

Better yet, trade for Josh Bell. Although, it is my understanding that Bell is a pretty weak defensive player. I like the idea of acquiring Bell, though, with the goal of keeping him next year as the replacement for JD Martinez.

A shaky prospect who has 23 HR, 72 RBI, 876 OPS in less than a year in MiLB. He's 22 and you've already written him off. So shaky to Sox brass that they just promoted him to AA last weekend. Great analysis.

I haven't written him off at all, einstein, I'm just saying that until those power numbers translate at the AA level the odds are against him. That's the big jump, from high A to AA and most prospects don't succeed. The problem with Binelas is that he has limited tools to rely on beyond his power and that obviously works against him ever developing into a quality major league player.

This is the first season he’s hit under .300 in the minors.

As for his odds, they work against most prospects…

Maybe, but if they think he’s worth $8M, this year and they still play him FT, I’m not so sure.

They got the 2 prospects and I'm sure they were hoping for better than a .555 OPS. I see no reason they would feel committed to bringing him back for 2023. As I said if they exercise the buyout it doesn't affect this year's tax number. And obviously it would wipe him completely off the payroll slate for 2023.

I'm disappointed, I was hoping for some bounce-back, but hope is running out.

No Yaz Fan since '67 need ever apologize. Besides, I often do the same thing.

I agree, and I’ve said all along that this must be about the prospects and Bloom’s view that they will be better than most rankings have them placed.

Even if JBJ bounced back to.700, the money part would still make the deal a real head-scratcher.

It’s Binelas and Hamilton, because it ain’t gonna be JBJ.

@bostonsportsinf

There are 1,569 batters with > 3,400 AB’s, in their career, in the HISTORY of MLB

Only 1 players has

BA ≤ .230

OPS ≤ .700

K ≥ 1,000

Jackie Bradley Jr

crazy but true
