The 2020 Red Sox were eliminated in March when both Sale and ERod went down for the season. That was just too much to replace in too little time…

The signs were that Sale would have missed the season long before March. They also dealt Price off and didn't re-sign Porcello. The only guy they brought in was Perez. Perez wasn't going to take the place of Sale, Price AND Porcello. They were already under water long before ERod went down. They CHOSE not to sign any starting pitchers and went for a gumbo of Eovaldi, Perez, Weber, an opener and then Covey/Hall/Springs three headed monster as the 5th starter. https://www.mlb.com/news/red-sox-2020-season-opening-day-roster-projection The reinforcements they were waiting on were Brian Johnson and Zack Godley. They lost so many games because they didn't field a competitive starting rotation. Even if ERod was healthy last year, that rotation was garbage and embarrassing.

But they have gone over whether "significantly" or not. They would like to stay under, but they have the ability to go over.

They have the ability, yes. History shows they much prefer not to.

Tanking is not pretty.

2020 was just an unstoppable snowballing cluster. You're right about Sale and Erod, but Cora, Betts, Price, Porcello and others were also gone for various reasons.

If ever there was a perfect time to tank...

We lose some salary, this winter without many major holes to fill due to players moving on. (Pedey, Richards, Ottavino, Perez & maybe ERod)

Next winter, we lose even more, but some will be hard to replace:

$22M JD

$20M Bogey

$17M Eovaldi

$15M Price

$7M Vaz

We can afford Devers, a big contract (pitcher) and a bunch of mid rangers, but we have very little wiggle room for mistakes, at least until we can get some more farm contributions (Casas, Seabold, Bello, Duran, Wickowksi and more.)

It makes sense financially to promote our best prospects year to year. Other than that, we can trade JDM this winter and pick up Schwaber at essentially the same cost. Vaz will be much harder to replace.

Based on I disagree.

Wake up and smell the coffee, buddy. They traded Mookie and still wouldn't go over the tax line this year. Game over, man!

Still not rooting for the owner's checkbook. They can go over whenever they feel like it. Unless......................................

Now that Lebron is part owner, is he pissed off at Paul Pierce getting into the HOF and is still mad at getting beaten up by him when Pierce was in his prime.

The call is coming from inside the clubhouse. The owners are actively trying to kill the franchise. Someone needs to shoot Lebron with a silver bullet or blow him up like at the end of Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3 and Jaws 4.

Possible the up-in-the-air status of Sale had any impact? Why go all in if you don’t even know if you’re going to be at full strength?

I think they will go over next year. They now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Or at the end of Air Bud 23, when he was competing at skeet. You do remember the ending of “Air Bud: Sharp Neuter”?

I'm waiting for you to provide the list of the 17 movies between Spikes Back, the last canon Air Bud movie, and Sharp Neuter.

I agree with you.

I don't see a major overhaul.

We made progress this year.

As long as we're improving, there's no point in starting over.

Technically, we have all the positions players coming back.

We can throw in Houck and Whitlock to the rotation mix.

We just need to add depth and quality to the pen, either internally or via free agency.

Continuing what we did last year involves filling key roles via pick-ups.

Yes, we can fill some from within, but we need more than just depth and pen help.

Do you at least agree that our position players are set? Only position we don't control is DH but either way it's replaceable, probably at cheaper cost.

Well, let me see.

There was that golf one. I think it was called “Beagle That Hole.” They he made the next WNBA one “Spayed Away Jump Shot.” I think he made that curling straight-to-DVD one called “Bone Spiel.” And who can forget the classic “Play Deadball Foul” basketball remix. And his classic one based on dogs playing poker - “Mutt the Deck”.

I think there were some others. Wasn’t there another baseball one called “Switch Litter”?

I think we all know who the DH is going to be next year…

Don't forget that fine-fielding first-sacker "Scoop Dawgy-Dawg".

I now wish I hadn't asked.

Xander Bogaerts.

Absolutely. But I think you misspelled his name; the proper spelling is JD Martinez.

Be more careful next time…

The position players are set, if we want them to be, but 3 of our 5 rotation pitchers are FAs.

Our closer and top set up guy through June are FAs or named Barnes.

Our 2Bman missed 2/3 of the season, which seems to be common.

We need a solid utility guy, and we have 4 everyday players that can or will be FAs after 2022 (C, SS, CF, DH)

I wouldn't say we are all set and just need some depth and pen additions to improve on 2021.

I would get rid of either Vaz or Plawecki. Replace Vaz with Manny Pina or replace Plawecki with some cheap glove only guy who is just holding a spot for Hernandez or Wong.

I'd consider Arroyo to be the UTIL guy and sign Cesar Hernandez to play 2b.

Offer QO to ERod.

He's going to opt out. The Sox will then offer QO. He'll decline. Then he'll sign with the Tigers as a MiLB FA with a Spring Training invite.

The only way Martinez opts out is if the NL formally adopts the DH for the 2022 season before his decision date (or if Boras strongly suspects it will happen this coming off-season).
