Good take and I agree 100%. Let’s see what the Jays can do now. The Skanks are riding high at this point but baseball has a way of humbling you fast.

All will be forgiven when we beat the Yanks in the WC game.

I take full responsibility for this STUNNINGLY STUPID thread!

I basically taunted the baseball gods, playing up the significance of these two series, knowing the risks.

This thread should be banned. No more ********! Just play good baseball & good luck to the Sox.

TV viewers were forced to watch last night's game on the Yankees Channel called ESPN. It featured a whole special in-game feature on Judge and commercials by Judge and Stanton. Luckily, they didn't show the Bucky Dent pop-up until the 3rd inning...

I must've missed the clips when they showed the biggest choke in baseball history, when NY gagged four straight games to Boston facing elimination in 2004 -- something that happened this century, 26 years AFTER 1978.

That 2004 example shows just how trends can change on a dime.

Lost 3 straight to the Yanks- some by a lot. Sound familiar?

Then... BAM!

This season is NOT over folks!

Keep the faith!

I have no faith.

I also have no despair.

I just watch and see what happens.

Not to mention on 1978, a lot of fans forget which team won and which team lost their last games to even make that one play-in game even happen…

We beat the Jays after the Yankees lost to the Guardians in a shocker, and when the Jays made their last out Dick Stockton said "And we go to tomorrow!"

...and it wasn't just the final day: the Sox won their last 8 games to force that game. Just one loss and no game.

true, the Yanks went 6-2, their last 8 games to keep the pressure on us, but it's hard to call winning the last 8 needed games a choke.

I have said it all season, the Yanks are the more talented team. They hadn't played like it until recently. They have the lowest ERA in the AL for a reason. Their rotation, even with all the guys coming in and out, has been 4th best in the AL in ERA. They have the 3rd best pen by ERA. Their issue is their inconsistent offense. Lemahieu was an MVP candidate last year. Judge is a perennial MVP candidate having a monster year. Stanton has been really good this year. We added a guy who has already hit 38 bombs and a solid 1b who have helped even out the lineup. And yet, the lineup still isnt hitting well. It's a leadership issue, a coaching issue, whatever, but it is not for lack of talent. When the talent plays to their potential, the sox shouldn't be even with us. The fact that they are one game back with 6 to play is a testament to the Yanks underachieving and to the Sox overachieving and to Cora's management (and Boone's utter mismanagement).

In terms of what I expect to happen, I expect the Sox to win 4 of their final 6 winning both series. I have no idea what the Yanks will do as theyve been inconsistent to say the least, but they will be benefited by TB laying down and resting starters for the POs. The Jays are gonna be the wild cards for the final 6 games. Sox fans should actually hope the Yanks take care of business vs them as they play Baltimore to end the season and they have demolished Baltimore the last couple months. Good chance Yanks go 3-3, Jays go 5-1 and Sox go 4-2 and there is a 3 way tie. If there is, it is a coin flip for which team moves onto the WC1 spot and then the other two teams play a playin game with the winner playing WC1 coin flip winner in a winner take all event to go to the ALDS

There were times you said your team sucked. That implies lesser talent.

It wasn't just about Boone, either. You have a ton of guys under performing and only 2 guys you can count on for hitting bigly.

Your pen is still a question mark, but looks better than ours.

Your rotation has remained better than ours for the last 3-4 months.

Our defense is as bad as it gets, but you guys are trying to outdo us, there.

Our offensive and baserunning performances have sucked. Our managing has sucked. Our coaching has sucked. Our pen is deep, especially with Loaisiga coming back tomorrow. Our rotation has outperformed my expectations. It's all about the offense and their utter lack of consistency. They have the talent, but can they find the consistency late and carry it into the postseason. If they can, then they are dangerous. If they cannot, then they might not even make a play in game

Every team has similar "ifs," and nobody know which ifs will work and which will not.

Aaron Boone made one of the strangest moves I have seen all year last night. He took out Holmes , who was absolutely nasty , almost unhittable , to bring in a lefty . With predictable results. Luckily for him , the Sox bullpen promptly gave it back .

I wanted to say, "And more whiffs..." but MLB stats show the Sox have struckout less than all but four AL teams. BTW, the two best contact clubs, by far, are Toronto and Houston.

And for those who think the last three games in Washington should be easy wins, consider: the Nationals' batters have the least amount of Ks in the NL. If that translates to more balls in play... vs. Boston's D... ulp.

We've also let up less dingers.

Are you using season long numbers? They made a few changes in late July, including sending us an unnamed LF/1b/DH…

Nats can hit, they just can't pitch and field.

8th worst in ERA

2nd worst in HR's allowed

They traded away their two best fielders and the remaining defense is pretty bad.

It's the kind of team that the 2021 Sox can beat up pretty good.

They traded their 5 best players excluding Soto (Max, Schwarber, Turner, Gomes, Harrison). That's definitely "a few" LMAO.

Lane Thomas and Riley Adams have played well after being acquired though.

If New York sweeps tonight I totally expect them to confidently win their last two series and host the Wild Card game. ERod is a decent pitcher, but never seems to step up big in moments like these. What's the more likely scenario: he is lights out for seven shutout innings, or goes to full counts on every batter, puts the Sox in an early 3-0 hole, and is gone before the 5th?

ERod ended up being somewhere in the middle of those 2 scenarios. I know the pen hasn't been good, but as with most of the Sox losses, I am more frustrated with the offense than with the pitching. Scoring 3 runs a game just isn't going to cut it.

I share your feelings, but remember this: the Yanks have gotten to this point several times, this year, only to stumble and bumble their edge away.

They have major flaws just like we do, and time catches up with them just like us.

It seemed, to me, like we lost, yesterday, more than the Yankees won. Yes, they got the key hit, when it mattered, but we handed them the opportunity.

Maybe, they return the favor, tonight.

I hope the Jays and the Rays take it to them this week. Regardless, the Sox have to take care of their own business. We control our destiny into the playoffs. I like our chances.

That is why some of us liked Dombrowski . Three straight A.L. East titles over the Yankees. ( And the Rays)

I get it. I don't agree with the sentiment, but I get it.

Even though the Jays are behind us in the standings, I am pulling for them 100%. That does require the Sox to have to win their games to stay ahead of the Jays.

And yet, the Yankees have the 4th best run differential in the division.

I know I've said it many times already, but it needs to be repeated.

The Red Sox will make the playoffs. Book it.

It would take a total meltdown for us to miss out. It’s more about who else makes it and where the game is played.

Well, what if they only go 3-3 in these games? I'm not sure I'd call that a total meltdown, but it could put them in jeopardy.

Jays take 2 of 3 from Yankees and go 5-1 overall. That would pass us. 4-2 would tie.

Yankees take 1 from Jays and 2 from Rays. They would stay ahead of us.
