Sale’s command was spot on last night. While he touched 95, he was sitting 90-92. Without that premium velocity, he’s not the Sale you remember. He’s very much a good pitcher, but that velo was going before the elbow issues and it doesn’t appear it’s returned with the rehab

Really stupid that they didn't cancel tomorrow's game and make today a doubleheader, especially this late in the season

Good point; a lot of people are making last minute hurricane preparation plans today, but rescheduling Sunday to Monday might be even more unlikely for fans to be able attend if they're dealing with clean-up and power outages.

Based on the accounts I've read, he can still throw 96-97 when he wants. But whether out of caution or out of developing a new mix, his regular velocity is obviously lower. Maybe the new Chris Sale doesn't want to be the old Chris Sale, he wants to be an effective pitcher who can mix up speeds and not overtax his repaired arm.

Should be playing a double header today because the game likely won’t be played tomorrow.

No team will ever do this. It's too much of an administrative hassle.

Maybe that's the new philosophy, who knows?

I’m not sure where you get your numbers from, but watching both games he’s pitched, I saw 93-94 often enough, and fangraphs sows he hit 96 in both starts.

You did the same with his return velocity numbers the last time he came back and continued repeating lower velocity numbers even after I provided the fan graph link to you 2-3 times.

Seriously, where do get these lower than everyone else velo numbers from?

Plus, for his first two starts back one can expect lower numbers followed by some amount of uptick.

Many returning pitchers take time to get their control, so maybe Sale is not your average TJS returnee.

Velocity these days is not that important. What it’s important is a good repertory with great control and specially command.

Chris Sale had always had the later plus of course the velo.

As Bell said, if he can mix well his pitches and time to time he can throw 96-97 FBs, he will still nasty while protecting his arm.

I recall the Sox moving a Sunday game up a day and playing a doubleheader on a Saturday against the A's about 10 years ago. I'm pretty sure it was 2011, because for some reason I always remember it occurring right before the September collapse that year.

Sitting 90 to 92? He was more in the 93 to 95 range. He's just getting warmed up. He was throwing 97-98 in his rehab.

It is amazing the stuff he makes up to make himself feel better about the Yankees chances.

Sale v. Cole in the wild card game. That would be wild! The Red Sox just need to beat up on lousy teams and maybe the A's go into a slump.

After what happened in 2004 and 2018, when the Red Sox kicked the Yankees ass all over the place in big games, you know that Jackson wants no part of the REd Sox in the wild card game. He would rather see the Yankees play the A's. Jackson is scared--real scared.

Rangers going with another stiff tonight. Lyles is 5-10 with a 5.55 ERA. Jump right on him in the first and take charge of this game. No excuse not to sweep this sorry bunch. They are no better than the Orioles.

Was tonight the night the death spiral stops or was it just a temporary pause.
it looks like Sale’s game was merely a pause after the hapless Rangers spanked us 10-1 at Fenway on Sunday night.
