The Boston Red Sox are a big market , big money team . One of MLBs highest payrolls. A talent laden , star studded lineup. Three years removed from one of the all time great teams. They are not a rag tag , gutty , gritty band of underdogs. Expectations should be high . No excuses if they fall short. Pretending otherwise is a cop out.

I agree.

It’s not the same as the 2018 team.

This team was built on the embers of a once great rotation that crumbled in our midst.

Only 9 players remain from that 2018 team, and one of them was not even there when the season started…

" Some of us are fans of baseball , etc." Could that be any more pretentious? My god.

Right.

As opposed to the whole “if you’re happy with a surprisingly good season, that’s loser talk” mantra.

Crazy thought - don’t tell other people what to enjoy and not to enjoy…

And one is Brasier- acquired in march of 2018, but not added to the 40 until mid-season.

Go buy a tee and a hitting net. You guys will feel better.

What makes you think I don’t already own a tee and a hitting net?

And really, while the 2018 was great, the bulk of the same team came back for 2019 and won fewer games than the 2021 Red Sox…

We need to stop saying things like , " Why , even if we don't make the playoffs , it was a great season. Exceeded all of our expectations , etc. " That is losers talk and a total cop out. You have a shot at the brass ring , you go for it . You don't call it a success if you fail.

Yes! We are going to make the playoffs.

I wonder whether people go negative just to never be overly disappointed.

I'm trying for the perfect equilibrium where I accept the outcome. Zen Fandom or something like that.

Mind you I can only do this because the 4 rings have made me fat and contented as a fan.

I’ll be mildly disappointed when we are done for the year. We did better than I expected and look good/ better going into next year.

The anxiety, stress and despair for me ended , along with the Bambino's curse , in 2004. I now am able to hope for the best , relax and enjoy the games stress free. I feel sorry for those who make themselves sick over every setback. Even during 2018 , one of the smoothest , easiest rides to a title that you could hope for , some folks were having nervous breakdowns . To each his own , but these games are supposed to be fun. They are not supposed to be bad for your health.

I’m kinda the same. Take 2019; I was maybe the first to give up on them, but I still watched every play of every game and had fun.

4 rings in my lifetime is 3-4 more than I thought I’d ever see.

If the season were to end with Seattle going 5-1, Toronto going 4-2, the Red Sox going 3-3 and the Yankees going 2-4 so that all four teams finish 91-71, then the MLB tie-breaker rules would go into effect for the rare occurrence when four teams would tie for the two wild-card spots.

I believe the sox hold the tie breaker against the Jays and Yanks.

Yes, 10-9 vs each, bt in 3 or 4 way ties, I'm not sure how it works. The link provided does not work for me.

See the Jeff Passan tweet above.

I do not think head to head determines who goes right to the WC game and who has to play in a play in game in the event of a 3 way tie. I think it is the good old coin flip.

If 3 teams tie, they do not send one to the WC game. Teams are designated as A,B and C. Team A plays Team B. The loser plays Team C. Both winners advance to the WC game.

Home field is determined using head-to-head records as the first tiebreaker.

With the 2022 expansion of the postseason field from 10 teams to 12 teams, tiebreaker games will no longer be used to resolve ties in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. That means no more “Game 163.” Instead, ties will be broken by math, with specific outcomes

I think the team with the best head-to-head gets first pick to decide if it's A, B or C. Obviously, everyone would want to be C and hope A vs. B is a back-and-forth nailbiter that uses up entire pitching staffs.

It would be cool, though, to see the Red Sox forced to play three consecutive playoff games (including the actual WC) vs. multiple foes and qualify for the ALDS. Could this board survive; on second thought, the board will still be here afterwards, but may need to recruit new members to replace those who can no longer type due to strokes.

Why would everyone want to be C?

Picking to be Team A gives you two chances to win, with the first game being a home game. Team C has only one…

So in the above scenario, the Yanks would be club C since they lost series to sox and jays already. That means the Yanks will have a one game win and you're in. What that also means is the Yanks one game win and in would be with their ace on the hill (presumably) while the loser of the A and B game would have burned theirs

Have you seen how effective Red Sox relievers are trying to pitch two days in a row? (Have you seen them try to pitch one day in a row?)

Sorry to answer your question with more questions, so: any C team would most likely get to face a foe's #2 starter instead of #1, and also bat against a bullpen possibly spent from and almost definitely used in high leverage the day before.

Yeah, the C team has one less chance of securing a post season spot, but they also are handed a gift by facing a team who just lost a win and in game and presumably burned their best starter and some of their pen
