Is Whitlock the answer for the 9th tonight ? Let's hope so

Sorry, I thought Barnes was still feeling a little off.

Getting the feed from Detroit and one of the guys in the booth is Kirk Gibson. One of the best athletes of his generation. A great baseball player and a great football player. Similar in that respect to Bo Jackson. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

If I was asked who was the greatest athlete I ever saw, I would respond with Jim Brown. Besides being a phenominal football player, he was also a fantastic lacrosse player and an excellent college boxer.

In fact. many lacrosse rules were changed because of Mr Brown.

1st base continues to look bad with Cordero and Dalbec. Schwaber not expected back until the 15th (or later). We will just have to muddle through with who we have.

I remember him in the NFL, where he was incredible. But I never saw him play lacrosse at Syracuse. Kirk Gibson doesn't come close.

Bo Jackson, however, was pretty amazing. I did see him play MLB in person at KC. An incredible arm from the outfield and a pretty fair hitter. Also a terrific running back in the NFL, but not as good as Jim Brown.

Obviously, relief pitchers don't have their good stuff every time they're called, but Taylor has had his good stuff more than most this season.

Until tonight, 33 of his last 34 appearances were scoreless. Pretty darn impressive. He is a valuable piece of the bullpen along with Whitlock, Sawamura, O, and Barnes. Hopefully now Robles and Davis. Sox just have to have leads going into the 6th.

"Gibson doesn't come close." Besides having an exceptional career in baseball, including his winning the NL MVP in 1988, Mr Gibson was inducted into the college football hall of fame in 2017. He still holds pass receiving records at his alma mater Michigan State. So, I'd say he comes pretty close.

And almost forgot; before Gibby had his serious leg injury, he was one of the fastest runners in baseball, who could also hit for power.

ERod threw a ton of fastballs, and by golly they worked. So did the changeup. Not many sliders or curves. Congrats to him and his catcher Vazquez.

Bullpen did another fine job of course.

All 4 rbi's from dingers by JDM, Renfroe, and Duran. Not sure what to make of that, but it sure was nice to see.

I define 'great athletes' as individuals who excelled at more than one sport. In that respect, I would place Bo Jackson 2nd to Jim Brown, but obviously, that's just my opinion. Another, whose name hasn't been mentioned, is Dave Winfield, who was also an excellent college basketball player at Minnesota.

John Havlicek was a Hall of Fame basketball player who was also drafted by the Cleveland Browns and went to training camp with them as a WR. Wilt Chamberlain revolutionize basketball and was also an outstanding volleyball player. Bob Gibson was a hall of fame pitcher who also played with the Harlem Globetrotters.

A lot of people would say that whoever wins the Olympic Decathlon is the World's Greatest Athlete.

Ted Williams was the greatest hitter of all time and at one time he was the world's best fly fisherman while also being one of the world's best fighter pilots. That is impressive. He was the man.

Ted was in real life what John Wayne could only pretend to be in movies.

Another 0 for 4 night from the 1b position (Cordero 0 for 2, Dalbec 0 for 2). This Cordero-Dalbec platoon is going swimmingly. :(

It's one thing to go 0hfer, but getting in the way of a pop-up that should've been caught by an outfielder can be fatal in a close game. I know Cordero was trying, and Renfroe or anyone else should have called him off -- if they didn't fear for their lives getting flattened by a freight train.
