Why not? Of course he's had a great half-season. But isn't he more likely to 'regress to the norm' (.230) than suddenly to become a player he has not been until this year?

Batting average is not the right number to worry about.

There is still some good pitching available.

I guess it depends on how much Bloom thinks the "win now" idea matters.

We know he values the future highly, but the pressure to go for it, this year, must be there.

My first choices would be Means, Berrios, Hendricks and Morton- in that order, but not if it coasts way too much.

I think we settle for Gray, Pineda or Boyd (not on your list).

The Orioles have said they are not trading Means.

According to a report, Jesus Aguilar is not expected to be traded.

No news on J.Schoop. Maybe the Red Sox do plan on playing Kyle S. at 1b. The Red Sox must know that their infield defense stinks. Maybe they don't care or believe it matters? Some say with all the shifting going on, infield defense is less important than ever. The days of Ozzie Smith are long gone.

Looking ahead to the offseason, hopefully JD Martinez opts out and the Red Sox resign Kyle S. That would be ideal. If JD doesn't opt out, the Red Sox could shave a little off his 20 million one year contract and trade him.

Why in a hurry to get rid of JD?

I'm really hoping that one of the following two will be traded today: Cordero or Dalbec. With the acquisition of Kyle S., Cordero's LHB isn't needed. Dalbec is a more useful player, since he can also play 3b, but he will need to retool his hitting in the minors at this point.

Then again, maybe players like Cordero and Dalbec aren't the kinds of players who get traded......

Why trade struggling players with options?

Cordero has no trade value and neither does Dalbec. You can send both of them back to AAA if need be. Dalbec should have been traded last offseason if you were going to move him. For now, send him to AAA and let him work on his k rate.

I'm Old School! (About half-way through my academic career, I realized that I could either spend weeks reading up on each latest trend -- as here, the latest dWARs or whatever they are-- or simply let them go away, until they were so obsolete, all my colleagues would scoff at any reference to them. I chose the latter!)

(Oh yes, as an aside--given the recent Covid situation, I think we're going to have to wait at least another year for me to pay off that bet with SeaDog tix!)

Perhaps because neither player is worth a 40 man roster spot in the offseason.

DFA Cordero. Keep Dalbec.

He is getting old. I think the money is better spent on a younger Kyle S.

Not only is he younger, but also worse! He wins all the comparisons!

Maybe we can get a younger Jordan Lyles after missing out on the older, decrepit Scherzer!

Actually, if history is accurate, LH bats do well in Fenway.

How can any Yank fan not know this.

But isn't there only a month left in the minor league season? He can get some work in at AAA, but a limited amount. And then the Red Sox face a 40 man roster crunch and Dalbec probably shouldn't be on it.

Over the past 5 years, Berrios is 18th in fWAR and Hendricks is 21st. Both have about 720 innings pitched. Most of their other stats are fairly close together. I don't think you can look at them and say that Berrios is by far the superior pitcher.

Did someone say by far?

We just ranked them by preference.

An' please your honour...

Even most old schoolers recognize more than BA. Schwarber takes a lot of walks, so he has a respectable .337 on base pct. And he has averaged 38 old school home runs and 86 old school RBI per 162 games.

One ghost is enough, please.

We have 8 guys to DFA before Cordero, and yes, Cordero & Dalbec have some trade value.

Dalbec is better than some of the guys they'll try to sneak on the 40 man.

In a few years, M.Mayer will turn into every Yankees fan worst nightmare. Can't wait.

Only if the SOX are in need of a bag of baseballs and/or catching equipment.
