You stopped saying Renfroe and Taylor suck.

What happened?

Didn't you also say we should demote Devers when he started slowly?

Posted
There is a difference between sucking and pressing!

There's also a world of difference between demotion and giving a kid another chance and cutting them loose.

I'm all for demoting Cordero. I have been for days.

I'm all for lessening Dalbec's playing time -Chavis platoon? If we had someone to call-up, I might demote Dalbec, too.

There's no way I totally give up on anyone over 5 weeks of slumping. If I did, I'd have given up on one of my all time favorite players, JBJ, several times over his career. Jackie started his career at .538 over his first 530 PAS! NOT 100! 530!

Not only that, JBJ started the next season at .426 over his first 71 PAs, so we're talking over 600 PAs of near .500 hitting.

He then hit 1.441 over the next 90 PAs for one of the hottest streaks a Sox player has ever had.

I'm not saying Franchy or Dalbec are the next JBJ, but you don't just cut players loose after a 100 PA stretch of bad hitting.

I'm assuming Ghost wants to DFA both of them.

Wonder what he'd say about this guy?:

54 games, slash line of .197/.291/.289/.580

No doubt, he'd have wanted him DFA'd.

Or maybe this player, who over his first 2 years:

147 games, slash line of .197/.323/.365/.688 with 151 K's (and his first 54 games were worse than that)

The first player ended up playing 1512 games over 14 years, his career slash line was .299/.365/.439/.805

The second played 2404 games over 18 years, ending up at .267/.380/.527/.908

The former won a Rookie of the Year Award, an MVP and has 3 World Series rings, Dustin Pedroia.

The latter won 3 MVPs, a World Series ring, has a plaque at Cooperstown and is the conversation for the best 3rd baseman ever to play, Mike Schmidt.

It is extremely unlikely that either Cordero or Dalbec is going to be that successful; writing them completely off after 50 games or so is stupid.

Continuing to play guys who obviously need to work on their hitting and losing winnable games is equally stupid, particularly when they have options. Moon put the question in perspective by asking who the replacement would be. Unless we go outside the organization, the outfield possibilities are Santana and Duran. Dalbec has Chavis, although due to injuries we are very thin at 2nd base right now. That is an artifact of carrying 14 pitchers.

Nobody is arguing Cordero needs to keep playing at the big level. Demote him not DFA him.

Dalbec needs to be platooned, at best and demoted at worst. DFA'ing Dalbec would be insane.

Bradley will never hit 40+ HRS, Dalbec will. Give him time.

Bobby has always had a nice OBP, too, so he's not a one trick pony.

He may need some time at AAA or as a platoon, but I'm still confident he can and will become a decent MLB player or better.

Probably also worth noting, there is no one on the Sox named "Frenchy"...

While Jeff Francoeur did play for 8 different teams, none of them were the Sox.

I wonder if he's a victim of the newer balls.

Blaaaaaa! Bradley was/is a superb centerfielder. Dalbec so far is a liability on defense while playing the easiest position. If he can hit 40 dingers, he will play, but right now his overall WAR of -1.0 is actually hurting the Sox.

That said, he did have that much-needed 3 run dinger to beat the Orioles, and he has shown potential last year with the Sox and in prior years in college and the minors.

He's a plus fielder who has gotten off to a bad start on O and D.

He deserved a 5 week plus look, and now it might be time to start cutting back on his playing time or consider letting him "work it out" at AAA, once Santana is ready.

108 plate appearances.

Not time to pull the trigger yet. But might be time to entertain thoughts on a Plan B...

@PeteAbe

And there you go. The Sox have optioned Franchy Cordero to Worcester.

.179/.228/.274 with 37 strikeouts in 102 plate appearances.

Posted

We might not have seen the last of Franchy. He has a few years of team control and 2 options left.

Who knows, if he starts to rake in AAA, maybe we even see him again, this summer.

Posted
Here's a thought. Just with left fielders with at least 100 PA's this year, there have been 6 starting left fielders who have a worse WAR than Francy, however, he is dead-last in OPS, but only .005 behind the next guy.......named Jackie Bradley.

It's unfortunate because Franchy has some of the biggest power in the big leagues, but all the power in the world means nothing if you can't barrel up the baseball. Hopefully Santana can replicate his 2019 and give this lineup a jolt.

I think the demotion to AAA could either revitalize his career or end it.

Wilson isn't coming up.

Agreed, but I mentioned his name, because we sent down an OF'er and Duran is going to the Olympics.

If we cut him, he'll get a chance with someone else.

I think he sees the bigs again, at some point- maybe even this year.

I don't think they cut him unless he is flat out garbage in Worcester.
