Rocker to the Sox- hints at big drop off after pick 4...

The MLB Draft is still three months away, but our experts, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, are set to release an updated and expanded Draft Top 150 later this week. While they won’t give the order away in advance, they did offer a sneak preview on the latest Pipeline Podcast.

I'm having my doubts Rocker gets that far. I have my doubts he drops to number 2...

I do, too, but it's nice to dream.

I do like the fact that they think the top 4 are all solid, and it drops off after that. That means we will likely get a solid player at #4.

I don't pretend to know more than Bloom & Co., but I'd feel better if we get one of those 4, and even better, if he's from a college.

As long as it's not my alma mater. Those Worcester Polytechnic Institute players rarely live up to their pre-draft hype...

MLB's new rankings #1-150. It's interesting that preseason guys once thought worthy of the top-5 have dropped so low; Hill is now #30, Fabian is #49. This could actually bode well for Bloom's second pick... 34th?

Fabian having a 32% k rate IN COLLEGE, isn't a good look.

@jimcallisMLB

I'll use this as an opportunity to plug @JonathanMayo's mock draft, which will be out tonight.

As of now, I think Mayer & Lawlar go in the top 3, leaving the @RedSox looking at some combination of the Vandy RHP & Davis at 4. My best guess w/7 weeks to go is Davis. #DraftTop200

If they have the choice of either Leiter/Rocker or Davis, it'd be gutsy to take Davis IMO. They better hit on it.

The high school pitcher Jobe has been moving up--he is an intriguing option. I was watching some of his video and he has a nasty slider. The Red Sox need SP prospects over position prospects. Still, I'm not taking a high school SP--too much risk involved. As good as Jobe looks now, how good will he look two years from now when he gets TJ Surgery?

Davis will be hard to pass on for obvious reasons. If the Red Sox come out of the draft with Davis, it will be a good day.

I've almost given up on any hope of getting a pitcher from our system.

'

We have done well by getting them from elsewhere, and stocking up on everyday players from our system.

That's not to say we can't change. It sure would be nice to get a deGrom form our own system.

A possible strategy:

The astute Twitter account, @redsoxstats, recently pointed out that the Red Sox could target either LSU’s Jaden Hill or Ole Miss’ Gunnar Hoglund in the second round. Both pitchers were potential first-rounders before undergoing Tommy John surgery this spring.

Great, let's draft pitchers already hurt. They'll fit right in!

(Sarcasm alert. Getting one of these guys in the second round would be nice.)

A possible strategy:

That’s a common Yankee first round strategy. They draft Kaprielian and Schmidt either knowing they needed TJS or after having it recently done.

I honestly think the Yanks will snag either if they fall to them.

If you have a late 1st round pick, you should always go for the high upside guy. Sox took too many Deven Merrero's.

Most recent MLB mock has Rocker falling to the Sox

Why do you think he's falling? He doesn't seem to be pitching worse? Is it just other players performing better?

But if he's right about Rocker dropping there must be a reason.

It's as good of a reason as anything else. His performance has been good. If his velo has dropped, it's a reason he'd go from #1 with a bullet to #5-7.

Posted
That was the reasoning on the mlb.com mock. His velo has dropped from high 90s at the beginning of the year to now sitting at 92-94. Still effective, but it’s a red flag. A pitcher first overall is always scary for teams because they’re one pitch away from being trashed. The Pirates need one of everything, so if they’ve got a chance to draft 1 overall and they’re not completely sold, they’ll go hitter which is what they’re mocked to right now

This new mock draft has Leiter and Rocker dropping to 5 and 6. So the Red Sox could have a shot at either of these guys and still pass? Interesting.

I've never trusted us drafting pitchers, but we have Bloom, now.

Take the best player- pitcher or not. I just hope it's a college player, but I don't pretend to know who is the best available at #4.

It seemed like for the longest time, the mock drafts had, pretty much, the same top 3 players, and it looked like we would miss getting one by one pick.

Now, it seems wide open.

It's what happens when you can actually scout players in person.

BA came out with a podcast 2 days ago called "who's No. 1?" There's some great stuff in there.

It's a weird draft year, not as strong at the top buy extremely deep, a ton of players who didn't go into last years pool will be on the board this year.

The fact that there was no Cape Code league, no season the year prior, and no national circuits mean a lot of scouts have been playing catch up. This leaves the possibility for a lot of movement in this draft. There will be guys who really rise/fall over the next month.

There does not really seem to be a consensus #1 there and we could see a few teams cut deals with players at the top.

Despite past performance of drafted pitchers I'd prefer Rocker then Leiter, some people are saying Brady House is the exact top of prospect Bloom likes. High School SS seems to be a strength in this draft.

Posted
The only reason I like Rocker over Leiter is his size and workhorse frame. Lot of people ilke Leiter over Rocker for good reason. When he's been on he's the more dominant pitcher and his velocity I believe has started to tick back up. I just like to dream on the upside of him if his consistency take even a small tick up.

Latest BA mock draft has Sox taking Leiter at 4 and passing on Rocker/Davis.

Just goes to show you how all over the place this can be. There are about 6 guys now who have projected as #1 over the past couple of months now. It will be interesting to see 3 straight high school short stops taken giving the Red Sox the first crack at the college arms. But you have to wonder if the Sox really like one of Mayer/Lawlar and would take them if they fall to them. If that was the case I guess you have to throw House in there too. Actually mlb.com has House mocked to Boston but we will see. Most mock drafts have those two guys going #1 and #2 but there's also a LOT of talk about no one separating themselves at the top this year. There is not a consensus #1 pick in this draft, but rather a tier of 5-6 guys, so things could get very interesting on draft day.

Apparently, Henry Davis has established himself as the best college bat in the lineup, Catchers don't go in the top 10 often, they turn out pretty good when they do so I guess I should be more excited if the Sox take him but for some reason drafting a good catcher who's #1 tool is his arm strength just isn't that sexy to me at #4.
