A first baseman in many cases has to be an absolute monster to get drafted high. Since that position in often filled at the MLB level by catchers or third basemen who can hit but do not field adequately...

Yes, so if Del Casttillo does not project to be a catcher, is he monster enough to draft so high?

He may be the kind of guy Bloom would go for. I'm with Moon, in that I'd prefer someone already starring in D1 (closer to the bigs); I saw a TV profile on high school athletes, and Jordan Lawlar hasn't even played in a single high school playoff game against top scholastic competition yet. It's not his fault there's a pandemic, but it does limit his experience and scout evals...

Not sure, but I think I would pass on him at 4 in favor of a few others.

If Del Castillo figures to not stick at catcher and Henry Davis does, I would take Davis over Del Castillo..

Bloom took a high school shortstop last season.

If last year taught us anything, Bloom will not be paying attention to someone else's rankings...

Great stuff from

@CarlosACollazo

. Updated draft projection has a clear top 3 in the draft-- Vanderbilt RHPs Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter, along with HS SS Jordan Lawler (forecasted as the No. 1 pick) --with another HS SS, Marcelo Mayer, increasingly looking like the clear No. 4.

So if Bloom is true to himself, he will avoid those 4 players and take someone no one saw coming, like Texas A&M RHP Bryce Miller. And then the media will rip him for the reach until Miller is pitching in Portland by August and fighting for a bullpen spot next March...

Seeing as a ton of critics that didn't like the Yorke pick have come around on it, I have confidence that Bloom can do better at #4 than I can.

Same here, but it is always shocking how many draft experts there are out there confined to message boards. And by this I mean in any sport...

I'm thinking we take Jud Fabian at #4.

Falls to low 1st round now?

Maybe second round, fourth pick?

Bloom comes away with Leiter and Hill? Dare I dream it?

No way is Leiter falling to 4.

I know. I doubt he falls to three.

In my mock draft, Rocker, Leiter and Fabian go 1-2-3. So who becomes the best choice at 4?

(Probably worth pointing out my mock draft stops after 3 picks.)

One of the 2 HS SS (Lawlar/Mayer)

I won't name the sites, but here are a few mock drafts:

Kumar>Lawler>Leiter>Mayer>Watson>Davis>Frelick>House>Hogland>Fabian

Kumar>Lawler>Fabian>Leiter>Mayer>McLain>Del Castillo>House>Wood>Madden

Kumar>Leiter>Lawler>McLaim>Mayer>Del Castillo>Fabian>JHill>Watson>House

Lawler>Kumar>Mayer>Leiter>McLain>J Hill> Fabian>Del Castillo> Madden>House

Kumar>Leiter>McLain>Lawler> Hill>DelCastillo>Binelas>Fabian> House>Mayer

5 samples: 3 different players projected. Fabian available in all but one of the 5 mock drafts.

I believe Fabian is a high K guy. Sox have enough of those. McLain is a 2B in SS clothing. Sox have enough of those. It will probably be one of the HS SS now that Hill is hurt.

You really shouldn't draft for positions of higher need, especially a HS player that is so far away, you don't know what you'll need in 4-5 years.

If all things are even, I'd go pitching.

Taking MLB ETAs into consideration for a desperate franchise, I'd opt for the best baseball player over the best athlete any day. Right now I think Leiter is at the top of the draft (though there's a long way to go).

If Leiter is there at 4, it has to be a no-brainer.

I hope we take a college player, but I trust Bloom & Co.

At least he's a college player.

Some mock drafts have him going 13th or lower.

Maybe get him under slot and get a guy over slot later on?

Like Jaden Hill?

Same strategy the Royals used grabbing Hunter Dozier in the first round and saving slot money for Sean Manaea...

I worry that someone will just nab Hill before then, but maybe a guy like that.

Oh it's very likely. If us under-informed folk like him so much, safe bet he is not a secret from the front offices around the league...

If Leiter is there at 4 and the Sox pass, should we be disappointed?

It seems like we should be, but I can't pretend I go into this with equal information to the Sox front office (or any team's front office).

MLB.com has Leiter going 7th, citing his size (6' and 195lbs) and his walk rate as reasons he falls. Now this draft was done in December, 2020, and Leiter has certainly has cut down on his walks (from 4.6BB/9 to 3.4BB/9) since then. But he is probably still close to 6' 195lbs...

I'd be personally disappointed, but I'd know that much of the draft is a crapshoot and trust Bloom & Co. know what they are doing more than I do.

Oh I will definitely be disappointed if that happens. I'm not expecting the opportunity to even be there, so I think it would shock me more. But at some point, I can definitely acknowledge that every GM in the league has more knowledge of every single player in college than I will ever have...
