Why? To make room for who?

Whoever is hitting the best in AAA. If he's going to be a .200 hitter going forward, what's the point in having him around?

He did struggle in 237 PA last year. A lot of hitters did. Spring Training was cut short, stopped and restarted weeks later in an abbreviated fashion.

But getting worked up about him in spring training this year?

I'm not worked up about spring training. I'm just saying that if he continues to massively struggle the first few months of the season, do the Sox end up making a change at some point? If so, when?

Could they trade him and pay 2/3rd's of his 2021 salary? Would anyone even want him since he has a player option for 2022?

I suppose urgency is a factor.

If this team is awful, which will probably largely be caused by the pitching, it gives Martinez a longer leash to try and right the ship...

Sure.

Maybe the Sox can get Chris Davis or Miguel Cabrera for him...

If they are well under .500 by Memorial Day, they are going to trade anything not nailed down.

Well, they will still need someone to be buying at that time. Trading isn't like sex; you can't do it by yourself...

If he's hitting like Chris Davis, may as well trade for him since he's a cheaper option.

Per BTV:

JD Martinez and Chavis would be a slight overpay for Davis, Mountcastle and Kremer.

I think BTV really struggles with the deals regarding "negative value" players though.

Chris Davis is owed $46 million over the next two years. JDM is over $38.75 million in that same time frame. If you think Davis is cheaper, than you are definitely the accountant I want doing my taxes...

He's paid $17M annually. Would the Sox pick up his deferred money after he retires?

Probably.

Why would Baltimore deal him if it costs them money?

Your brain worms mentioned Chris Davis, not me.

Yes because I assumed they'd be willing to dump the full $46million...

So the only people they could trade for is Cabrera or Davis per your post. May as well just waive JD if he's that bad.

If he truly is a negative WAR player going forward, may as well call up Ockimey/Chavis/Gettys/whoever.

Or is he decidedly better than the argument you made that he could be only traded for the two worst contracts in baseball?

Would you trade him for Votto? Stanton? Heyward? McCutchen? Price?

I'd say he could have more value than that. Maybe he still has enough perceived value that you could deal him for some salary relief?

I never said “only.” But yeah, both can be had. I was debating about Robinson Cano as another one.

I’d deal him for Price or Heyward, but I can’t see either of those NL teams taking a potential deadweight contract for DH who struggles to hit...

Last game he had a hit and two walks. I take my reasons for optimism where I can find 'em. Maybe he needs to get a little more patient and take more pitches.

And JD has two hits today. So he's been on base 5 times in 2 games.

Hope he turns it around. It’s the best thing for this team.

No doubt.

I have confidence in JD.

He'll be over .800, this year, and likely over.850.

I have confidence in him too. I think he will have a very JD like year.

The impact of him not performing well is significant since he have the highest pay level of any of the non pitchers on the squad. His value is based almost entirely on his hitting. So far in ST he hasn't demonstrated power. I am hoping we are not seeing a decline due to age.

From what I was reading earlier, JD doesn't typically demonstrate a lot of power in ST.

Or maybe he’s lost some bat speed. Like it or not, but he’s at the age where for some players, performance start to drop. The different between elite bat speed and average bat speed is far, far closer than you think

You sound worried, Jacko.

Are you still going to post when you’re 20 games back? Or are you gonna hide?

Kimmi doesn't hide.

We were 20 back at points in 2019 and 2020. Nobody hid.

When is the last time the Yankees won anything significant? I'd keep my mouth shut if my team hadn't won anything for 12 years and once in 20 years with the most money in baseball.

Says the guy rooting for the team with the #4 pick in the draft and making a strong effort to be top 10 for next year?

Arbitrary cutoff since we owned the last 5 years of the 20th century and missed the POs once in the first 12 years of this century. A dynasty was rebuilt and now we’ve been PO bound for the last 4 years and looking to be WS contenders now. Sox made it to the mountain top more times, yet they’ve also been basement dwellers way more times, like you will be this year

So you're officially predicting the Red Sox finish last this year. Got it.
