The only thing I remember about 2018 is the Red Sox dominating the regular season, winning the AL East, kicking the Yankees ass and stomping the Dodgers. One of the best teams ever!!!!

Nice memories.

  • Newly-acquired Franchy Cordero may not be ready for opening day, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Cordero has yet to clear COVID-19 protocols. It would be understandable to be judicious with someone in Cordero’s position – a not-yet established big-league regular joining a new franchise. Especially considering Cordero’s spotty injury history, the Red Sox may want to prioritize getting Cordero’s year started with a head full of steam. The Red Sox are planning to start the season with a short bench, but Cordero’s delay could mean an early roster spot for Michael Chavis or Marcus Wilson. By adding Marwin González and Kiké Hernandezthis winter, the Red Sox have afforded themselves plenty of roster flexibility.o

On his way to being a bust.

Good question.

The guy has 'all the tools," but we know that does not always lead to success.

Until he puts together a full season or two, we can't really use his numbers.

We can trust scouting reports and observations and look at his minor league numbers and reports.

Here are some reports I found:

Originally an error-prone shortstop, he moved to the outfield last year and was a natural as a flycatcher, showing excellent range and throwing ability with 60-grade speed and a 60-grade arm that work well in center field.

He's also exceptionally fast, ranking anywhere from the 89th to 98th percentile in sprint speed from 2017-19. His instincts remain a work in progress in center field...

A former shortstop, he owns a great arm for the outfield (so he can play right field at the highest level).

He also flashed impressive center-field defense, which might simply follow from how quickly he moves around. Observers have pointed out that Cordero’s outfield defense can still look a little raw and unpolished, but it’s important to consider that he entered the Padres’ system as an infielder, and he only started playing in the outfield in 2015, and in center field in 2016. Cordero is a positional convert. Having long been a shortstop before, we can tell he has the arm and the foot speed to make it all work. The early big-league results were encouraging.

Porcello is still out there. So he doesn't miss many bats -- at least he doesn't miss the strike zone, much, either. One thing you can count on with Rick -- whether he's good or bad -- he'll only walk about one batter per start. Lifetime BB/9 over 12 years: 2.1.

5-6 IP per start equates to about 2-3 walks per start.

???

One walk per five-inning start works out to 1.8 BB/9.

One walk per six-inning start works out to 1.5 BB/9.

Sorry, I didn't state my math -- I was figuring on half a game (half of 2.1), since that's all the average starter is expected to work these days. So 1.05 walks per start...

Yup, I got it backwards.

I've been doing that a lot, recently.

Age and eyesight are getting the better of me.

My bad.

@PeteAbe

Darwinzon Hernandez will get in a sim game tomorrow, Ottavino is scheduled for Wednesday.

Bogaerts is taking BP on the field tomorrow. Cordero is still not cleared,. Santana is on the field but still going through his throwing program after elbow surgery.

The issue with Cordero is that MLB hasn't cleared him so he can't join the team. He's working out by himself for now.

I was saying that just the other day to Trey Ball...

Such a critic -- Ball was an actual #7 overall draft pick!

What he wasn't was #8 Hunter Dozier, #9 Austin Meadows, #11 Dom Smith, #17 Tim Anderson, #32 Aaron Judge, #34 Sean Manaea, #36 Michael Lorenzen, #39 Corey Knebel, #54 Devin Williams, #124 Cody Bellinger, #240 Brad Keller, #249 Trey Mancini, #260 Mitch Garver, #268 Adam Cimber, #297 Emilio Pagan, #321 Adam Plutko, #365 Jeff McNeil, #429 Mike Yastrzemski, #475 Danny Jansen, #573 Adam Engel, #602 Ryan Yarbrough, #665 Luke Voit, #871 Cavan Biggio, #895 Rowdy Tellez, #1,056 AJ Puk...

Now I am disheartened knowing we missed out on Adam Cimber, Adam Engel and Adam Plutko...

IDK, but if I had to draft upside in Trey Ball over Dominic Smith (backup 1b), I probably pick Ball again.

Who knew on draft day, 2011, that some summer during a pandemic that Smith would lead the Mets with a .993 OPS!

In the defense of Sox drafters, they didn't know Trey from Adam back then.

We've had some players named Adam, and I can't remember any of them being very good LOL Hopefully Ottavino reverses the trend.

Are you dissing the memories of Adam LaRoche and Adam Stern?

It's weird to think that in the last 10 years, the Red Sox have had more players named Boof than named Adam...
