The Padres have acquired Yu Darvish.

@jay_jaffe

such a shame that the economics of baseball make it so that a small market team like the Chicago Cubs has to trade their best pitcher just so that the billionaire Ricketts family can turn a more handsome profit.

The value would also depend on their projected salaries. If Torres projects to make more money than Castillo through the arbitration process, then it would affect his trade value...

Torres has an extra year of control!

Ok but like I said, in their formula is very simple.

Projected WAR iconverted to dollars minus projected salaries. Sometimes they add marketability crap in there, which is fine for Trout or Betts, but probably not applicable to Castillo or Torres.

So find some projections for WAR for both players. Find their projected salaries. Do the math and see how it works out.

Or just contact the site and ask for an explanation. They update things all the time and welcome user input. I've gotten them to update numerous player values based on various logic, including this week when I questioned their insanely low valuation of Matt Boyd...

Have you asked them why Chavis & Chatham are so over-valued?

Do they just crowdsource their content?

I think they consider other voices. They aren't pretending to know everything.

It is possible they recognized my superior intellect. After all I spelled most of my worlds correctly and even used some of that fancy punctuation stuff, possibly even properly...

You should ask how the 'median' projection for Castillo is a little over 6 WAR per year for 3 years.

I think from math class that means he'll have a 7 one year, a 6 in another, and a 5 in the third; but not necessarily in condescending order.

That Hosmer signing really bit them in the arse.

In the past year, #Padres General Manager A.J. Preller has traded away 29 players, and still have one of the top 5 farm systems and a legitimate World Series contender.

Robert Murray

@byrobertmurray

Padres rotation in 2021: Snell, Darvish, Lamet, Paddack, Gore/Lucchesi/Morejon/Weathers.

Each players is under contract for multiple years and Mike Clevinger will return in 2022. These Padres are built to last.

It sounds like the Padres are set up for both the short and long terms. To be able to trade away 29 prospects in a year to build a WS contender for several years and still maintain a top 5 farm system which includes most of your very top prospects is incredible. Baseball goals.

The Padres trail only the Dodgers in projected team WAR and in odds of winning the World Series. If it's not the Sox, I really hope the Padres win it all.

A very good point was made that this trade was not about saving money, but about replenishing the farm system.

I don't think all the 29 were prospects, but it still shows how it can be done.

It was both.

The Cubs are in an unenviable position where after 2021, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez are all free agents. They need some young, cheap talent to supplement whichever one if any they decide to keep...

It looks like they really want to deal Bryant, so I'm thinking he's the last on that list.

1Bman seem to be a dime a dozen, so I'm not sure they go large & long with him.

I think they keep Baez, if any of the 3.

Of course it’s also possible they just dealt Darvish as a sell high maneuver. In the first two seasons of that deal, he only gave them 89 IP total. They might have been worried about more of that level of consistency from him from ages 34 thru 36...

My bad. From what I've read, 23 of them were prospects. Either way, the point stands.

I figured most were prospects.

Even the high spending Dodgers used to make deals for prospects at the same time they were dealing some away.

If I'm not mistaken, the Dodgers have maintained a top farm system (top 3?) for about a decade now while making it to the playoffs 8 years in a row. It can be done, especially when you have the financial resources like the Dodgers and the Sox have.

Yes! And, the Dodgers have now proven you can do the trifecta: keep a top farm system, make the playoffs and win a ring.

Didn't the Sox also do that through 2013? The farm didn't tank until the bad drafts and trades took its toll.

I don't think the farm was even top 10 or 15 when Theo left.
