Solid deal, although they are getting a bit of a logjam with middle infielders, considering they already had Keston Hiura, Luis Urias and Orlando Arcia.

I suppose this bumps Hiura to 3B.

This move does make Hernandez at 2yrs/$14mil look a bit questionable...

Kiké plays both CF and 2B at the same time like Buggs Bunny.

Rays in talks with Marcell Ozuna.

You read that correctly...

Those dumb catwalks are going to get worked over this year.

Wong signs with MIL. His deal is a two-year, $18MM contract that contains a club option for a third season.

Soria agrees to $3.5M from D-Backs.

But Kike does not pitch or catch, and Bugs Bunny did both in "Baseball Bugs" against the Gashouse Gorillas (which is my most commonly used name in Fantasy Baseball)...

If he were on the Yanks, you'd be singing an entirely different tune.

I’ve been pretty consistent on Whitlock. I think I said his ceiling is a Ramiro Mendoza type reliever/spot starter who would be a good bet to give multiple innings

Ottavino is getting $8.2 mil from the Sox and the Sox got a prospect

The Sox are paying his $3M bonus, which is paid in Jan '22.

3 + 8.2= 11.2, so yes, 6.5 is almost half.

Seeing players get signed by others teams at great values is getting really old! Sure as hell looks like Duran can handle himself in CF from what’s being shown in the winter league! Yet we don’t make a play for Wong, Colome, Soria, are we set at what we have! Walker, Greene, Rosenthal and a few others can still make an impact on this team! Mark my words... next headline “ Sox sign.... enter any over 32yr old OF here”! C’mon Bloom earn your keep and don’t throw the... he got us Verdugo crap!

If we sign Schoop & Rosenthal, I'd be thrilled.

I doubt we sign even one.

Duran is not viable in CF right now. His defense is not consistently good yet.

According to Cot's, the Yankees are paying $1 million of the $3 million deferred signing bonus.

And the 2021 luxury tax number for the Red Sox is $7.15 million.

At this point, I think the Sox might be done with pitching, beyond MiLB deals. If the soxprosects.com plan is right, the only MLB deals will go to a 4th outfielder and a LHH bench bat.

Somehow I’m thinking Marcell Ozuna won’t be that 4th outfielder...

If that's the case, it's pretty close to a punt.

If this is all we're doing, I might have to jump in with the crowd saying things like "How lovely-trading Mookie freed up room for Garrett Richards, Adam Ottavino and Kike Hernandez!"

Moves today & some from yesterday, so far... (per MLBTR)

Nelson Cruz signs with MN $13M

Chris Archer with TBR $6.5M

Chase Anderson signs with PHI $4M

Matt Moore signs with PHI $3M + incentives

Andrew Chafin with Cubs $2.25M w mutual option for 2022

Francisco Liriano with TOR $1.5M + incentives

Angels acquire Alex Cobb +$5M out of the $15M owed for Jahmai Jones BAL

Year after year we let Nelson Cruz sign elsewhere. I really don't get it. EDIT: I thought he still played outfield apparently he mostly DH's now and we already have JD.

Oh I am far from thrilled with Bloom this offseason.

While I am completely on board with building up the farm system and with not signing 30yo players for contracts longer than 4 years, at some point you have to put a watchable product on the field. In an offseason where more teams than usual are punting and cutting salary, now is the time to actual spend some cash, as the competition for free agents is lower than usual. And the whole notion that "this team cannot compete in 2021" is a fallacy. They certainly could with the right additions. But more important, if you do nothing, how will 2022 be different? It's not like this team has a slew of young minor leaguers ready to make a major impact on the team next year. The Sox are not one Bryan Mata and one Jarren Duran away from an elite roster. It's a good time to add some key pieces now that will still be there in 2022.

The biggest consolation for Sox fans right now is that on February 4th, 12 of MLBTR's top 50 free agents (including 2 of their top 4) are still available. And several of them could easily improve this team in 2021 and potentially beyond...

I read somewhere, we are paying the full bonus, but cots is a very trustworthy site.

Those numbers right there tell me there's as much chance of Bloom signing a closer as there is in him even listening to Scott Boras using the words "Fifty million" and "Bradley" in the same hemisphere.

No way we sign JBJ to 3 years-let alone 4 or 5.

Rightly so!

Not even JBJ himself can scale the fiscal fence to keep his Fenway legacy from going, going, gone. But it was fun while it lasted -- watching Bradley roam the pastures was above-average entertainment...

... in a dead pastime that no longer exists for those who tune into a New England sports TV talkshow, where hosts and callers blab about the Patriots 99% of the time, every day, all year, except when they show Bruins or Celtics highlights.

The worst part is this is nothing new; even when the Sox ruled the MLB in the summer of '18, hosts and callers cared more about the NFL draft and training camp. Sincerely, Backasoreus, Kneeasoreus, and Tricerabottoms.

The Cubs signed former Rockie closer Rex Brothers to a minor league deal. Who knew Brothers was even still pitching?

Even Rex himself probably wondered if he was, since he has only thrown 37 IP since 2014...

Hopefully, Theo Epstein and Ken Griffey Junior will work on saving what's left, because young fans whose parents drag them to live games ain't watching much on the tube and staying up past their bedtimes (and we aren't, either). A lot of kids who play baseball and attend games grow up to become young adults who watch more of the other, shorter sports during waking hours and call in to those shows.
