Rangers Plan To Decline Corey Kluber's 2021 Option

Offer a one year deal?

Worth a shot at a low cost.

Nats decline options on Eaton, Kendrick, Thames

Kendrick on a one year deal as placeholder for Downs? He's better than Arroyo et al.

I don’t think Kendrick, who turns 38 next year, is a full time option for 2b.

Adam Eaton is an interesting thought. He’s no Bradley, but he might be able to handle CF if he’s flanked by Benintendi and Verdugo...

The Rusney Castillo ERA in Boston officially is over:

He ended up with a 0.00 ERA, but I'm glad his era is over.

Pitchers already available: Kluber, 34, Anibal Sanchez, 37, and Mike Leake, 33. None of them are openers.

Should we add Collin McHugh, 34, to the list? As a 2020 opt-out, his arm has had a year off, like Leake's.

I'm fine with signing placeholders to our future, but I'm hopeful we can add a few players that be part of our longer term plans.

Thanks.

When's the rule 5 protection date?

We're down to 36 on the roster- not counting JBJ.

Here's my stab at identifying who is next to go:

1. Brice (out of option- may accept minor league role)

2. Stock

3. Hall

4. Springs

5. Aybar

6. Hart

7. Walden

8. Valdez

9. PEDROIA

10. Chatham

11. Arauz

12. Grullon

13. Wilson

@M_Montemurro

Phillies have outrighted LHP Adam Morgan and RHP Heath Hembree off the 40-man roster, sources say.

Both pitchers entered offseason arbitration eligible. Morgan had flexor tendon surgery earlier this month and has 6-9 month recovery. Hembree was acquired from Boston in Aug.

Stock is also out of options, so he is the #2 to go, as you said. Everyone else (except Pedroia) has at least one option left....

Do options even matter? You can use the option to get the guy back to MiLB, but that doesn't get them off the 40 man roster. Right now, the worry is the 40 man roster, not the 26 man active roster.

True., but some of the appeal for players on the 40 man is whether or not they also have to be on the 26 man.

If the Sox hold Stock, they are gambling that this career minor leaguer will either make the roster out of spring training or be DFA'd. If you are dedicating a 40 man roster spot, wouldn't it make sense to give preference to someone who does not involve that decision right off the bat? It's not like any of these guys are clear cut owners of a 40 man roster spot based on talent...

If the guys at the bottom are really that fungible, the difference between Stock and the other guys may not be that much. At that point, you just keep the guy who is more likely to contribute to the MLB roster.

soxprospects.com has Stock with 2 remaining options.

On a rebuilding team, you may keep the player with the most long term promise, like Aybar or Arauz.

Agreed, but if it's even, keep the guy with more options.

IMO, on this team, the 26th man will be a tougher roster decision than the 40th.

I think that goes into the "more likely to contribute" calculation. Guys like Brice have limited upside. You know what they are. A guy like Aybar might not be at Brice's level yet, but odds are that he can give you better value at some point.

I agree only because the 26th spot is most likely going to be another rule V guy.
