I think that goes into the "more likely to contribute" calculation. Guys like Brice have limited upside. You know what they are. A guy like Aybar might not be at Brice's level yet, but odds are that he can give you better value at some point.

Yes, but I was highlighting the emphasis on longer term help vs maybe just 2021.

If one thinks Aybar and Stock have equal chances at "helping the MLB roster," I'd keep Aybar.

I agree only because the 26th spot is most likely going to be another rule V guy.

Or even 2!

When we start signing free agents, that 26th to 27th slot will become a tougher and tougher choice. If Brice is still around, he will likely be the chosen one to be DFA'd.

I think that's what it is all about.

Unfortunately, deciding who is more likely to contribute between Brice, Mazza, Stock, Walden, etc. is a complete guessing game.

With Aybar, he is a bit younger and has the option of staying in the minors, so you have a few seasons to see if he can contribute.

If they DFA Aybar, it is because they just don;t think he has the talent. Sometimes that just doesn't work out either. While the Sox were trotting out this collection of retreads and hoping someone showed something, their own DFA in Jordan Weems was contributing in the bullpen of the AL West champions...

I see that, but on their 40 man roster page, it says 2.

Injuries have played their role, but Stock also has struggled to locate the ball throughout his time in the minor leagues (career 5.5 BB/9). He has a pair of minor league options remaining and was claimed by the Phils the last time he hit waivers, so perhaps another club will speculate on his powerful right arm.

Seems like he has two?

If Stock has 2 options, it probably helps his case a little. Of course, finding the strike zone once in a while would help it a heckuva lot more....

Per Fangraphs, he had 1 prior to the 2020 season, so he'd be out of options? WTF???

C'mon people!

Well he always has the option of returning to host Unsolved Mysteries...

They actually appear to have multiple conflicts regarding options. Matt Hall is another one they differ in the profile and on the 40 man page...

The 40 man roster lists it as options remaining after 2019 season.

So maybe it should say 1? The plot thickens.

On the other end of the transaction, Robert Stock gets sent back down. This is not a major surprise as Stock, despite a big fastball of his own, hasn’t really found his footing in multiple stints this year. The righty has tossed 13 1⁄3 innings for the Red Sox and has a 4.73 ERA with 14 strikeouts and 10 walks. He does have another minor-league option remaining for 2021, but given the roster crunch coming this winter he could be in danger of losing his 40-man spot at some point.

Ok, so some places say 2, some say 1 and some say 0. Great.

Of course, he could have 2 million options and it still wouldn't make him a lock to avoid a DFA. At best, it might put him behind a similar pitcher with none, like Brice...

Maybe there are actually 3 very similar pitchers named Robert Stock?

The Sox are stocked with Stocks!!

A very pressing issue is finally resolved.

He was #2 on my list even before I knew he had no options.

He and Brice are sure as gone.

1. Brice (out of option- may accept minor league role)

2. Stock (out of option- may accept minor league role)

3. Hall

4. Springs

5. Aybar

6. Hart

7. Walden

8. Valdez

9. PEDROIA

10. Chatham

11. Arauz

12. Grullon

13. Wilson

So we're out of Stock options?

I am bullish on keeping him around.

No, I suggest moving him for another player so we can discuss trading Stock...

@ZackMeisel

The Guardians have placed Brad Hand on outright waivers with the intention of declining his $10 million club option if he goes unclaimed, sources say. If a team does claim him, the Guardians won't be responsible for paying his $1 million buyout. Hand posted a 2.05 ERA in 2020.

He's still worth a claim for the Sox. Hand has an arm...

Wonder how Giants CEO Larry Baer markets his team to FA's this offseason? He's probably lower on Stock's value than we are.

I believe he prefers (Austin) Hedges...

Problem being that Bradley Richard Hand only has one "I."
