In the past year , I have gone to literally thousands upon thousands of high school baseball games , and I can say this : The Red Sox draft choices are far and away the finest in all the land .

You can be wacky sometimes.

Sometimes I make stuff up . And " wacky " is becoming pretty commonplace on TalkSox.

Wacky is an understatement

What has he done to merit “trust”?

He has a long and excellent track record with Tampa Bay. That's all the merit he needs.

But if you want more, he traded Mookie and Price for cost controlled younger players.

Wasn't he second in command at Tampa for most of his tenure?

He had enough input into their decision making to feel good about his ability as a GM.

We shall see. Before the pandemic, I was not happy with him at all as he seemed intent on coming North with a rotation of 3 starters.

He was intent on punting your season. And if the MLB season does end up at 75 games or so, it would be the smarter choice. What you’ll get out of Verdugo and Downs long term will be worth far more than an abbreviated Betts season and the final 3 seasons of Price

Perhaps he was willing to go into the season with the current roster, perhaps he was still working on adding another pitcher. I'm not convinced that he was intent on punting the season. There was too much talent on the team to punt.

That said, I am glad that he has a much more balanced view of the long term versus the short term than Dombrowski did. I know that Bloom did not foresee the pandemic, but the shorter this season is, the better the trade for Vertugo and Downs looks, not that it looked bad to begin with.

Trading Betts became the right move when Sale went down. The abbreviated season just emphasizes this...

A fluke is a fluke - I like Bloom but not even I will be crediting him for foreseeing a pandemic. :)

Oh I’m not crediting him with foreseeing a pandemic. I don’t even credit him with foreseeing Sale’s TJ (although it’s very possible he did know or strongly suspect at the time).

But would you agree that these subsequent events made trading Betts the right move?

We know he was trying to add pitching from his pursuit of Cal Quantrill. He was apparently looking to use adding high value/low AAV contracts as an enticement for other teams to give him what he wanted.

It didn’t work with San Diego, but it’s possible he had other similar deals with in mind or possibly even in progress...

Betts was dealt after the first case of COVID was diagnosed in the US. Many, many health care professionals (myself included) had predicted that it would spread here around that time. I do wonder if COVID played a role in the eventual deal.

Also, maybe Bloom just got lucky, but he gets lucky an awful lot. Eventually, guys who are continuously lucky are actually just really good at reading the percentages and making the higher percentage, although sometimes unpopular, move

I would doubt even Bloom foresaw an abbreviated season. MLB played a full season through the 1918 pandemic and they did not even know what a virus was then, let alone how to cure it...

Sox evaluators had to figure Sale was shot, and I think that made all the other moves easier: declining a declining Porcello and doing whatever it took to move Price (before it was too late), which conveniently freed them of the Betts dilemma -- as in, keep the face of the franchise for one more year, watch him walk away, and get nothing back.

I also think the brass kept the two starting pitchers they thought had the most value going forward: ERod and yes, Eovaldi -- who looked in March like a candidate for a full season of dominance... but now, after a long shutdown and accelerated opening, may be a candidate for an early IL.

I don't think middle-age pitchers anywhere will fare well in this truncated, constipated MLB season/tournament; they're off their long-established routines... never mind a long pandemic delay, you don't see many veterans going back on the mound after a long rain delay.

The prediction here is that the MLB hills and summer news will be dominated by a few young arms we've barely heard of before. Prepare for the youth to reclaim the game -- Vida Blue, Mark The Bird Fidrych, Fernandomania, save us from money talks and ******** walks!

And which young Sox arms do you figure? Darwinzon Hernandez and Thad “Not In The 40 Man Roster” Ward?

I will admit, I liked the Betts deal better when the Sox got Graterol...

I had forgotten about the pursuit of Quantrill. I'm sure he was looking to add cost controlled pitching in some way or another. Just because we don't hear about it doesn't mean there's nothing happening.

I'm not willing to go as far as giving Bloom credit for anticipating the pandemic shortened (or canceled) season, but this is a valid point. Bloom is good at what he does.
