You are a good man oldtimer. :)

Personally, I can't watch all of the coverage of the coronavirus, which is pretty much all you see, even on the sports channels. This is a good time to catch up on my reading.

We need to do a group baseball movie club. We all watch a certain baseball movie and then discuss.

I could be down for that.

We could also have game threads for our 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018 postseasons. The first 3 game threads of the 2004 ALCS would be epic. LOL

I don't want to torture my kids by making them watch that.

Fair. But that torture is so worth it when you know the ending.

Hitch, I always consider you a voice of reason.

Your doomsday posts on this topic are really alarming.

I have friends that live in Italy and Spain. The accounts of what is happening there are horrific Italy has a brilliant health system. They simply cannot keep up with the amount of people than need ICU beds. Spain is going the same way (well everywhere is), and the US response was so slow, so inadequate, so political that the spread will be almost impossible to stop.

Unless a miracle is found and quick, you can forget sport this year, this thing will wreak havoc across the US.

If you have even a tickle of a cough, or the slightest sense you might not be well, stay away from all your elderly loved ones (or anyone with bad health) for at least 14 days.

I would never spoil the ending of a movie for my kids.

I spent all of last July 4th on Martha's Vineyard explaining to my kids how Jaws isn't a scary shark and that he was just trying to give everyone kisses.

The current thinking is that baseball will resume around Memorial Day.

That is May 25th! I would take the over on that bet all day long. Only shot I think they would have at that is to roll right into regular season games immediately upon opening the stadiums again. If we learn enough from China, SK, Italy, all the countries that are farther downstream than we are to suggest that there is little risk on the back side of the bell curve for contagion then maybe they make May 25th.

There will likely be a good deal of pressure to get back up and running across the entire economy as so much of the economy is going to get hit in this. So many people are contractors or part of the gig economy and they are really going to take it on the chin.

One of my friends does marketing promotions. She has had three of her promotions canceled just now with no new jobs coming up. Everybody is canceling everything.

Having lived in Spain and having returned from Italy in October their situations are apples to oranges from ours. First the biggest problem for both is culturally they are a much more gregarious people then are we. They live in the street and cafes so the number of social interactions they have per day is much greater and more frequent than ours. This means the infection would spread faster. Secondly, both countries do not have as robust an emergency action response capability as do we. How do I know this because during my foreign service days this was my job for a number of yesrs. That is not to say it won't get worse here but anyone who has studied world history would know that in a crisis I'd rather have the Americans running the show and responding than either the Italians or Spanish and all four of my grandparents came from Italy.

Really? That's interesting. NBA is targeting mid-June, so I don't know if the MLB prediction is optimistic or realistic

A great health system means little against a pandemic like this. So far the most effective system seems to be aggressive testing--more is better.

I like the idea of discussing postseasons and games of the past.

I'm also a big fan of the NCAAT (march madness), which is perfect for replays. However, CBS owns those rights and apparently is not interested in exploiting them by showing them or selling them.

Having lived in all three countries, I would agree on the social interactions in general (although people socialise on mass in the big cities in the States, too), but travel around the States is also far more prevalent, with plane journeys being like bus journeys in Europe. It might have helped if Trump wasn't calling it a hoax made up by the Democrats and media for a week when it started appearing in the States. The reason Italy has been so catastrophically f***ed, is that the virus was transmitting freely in people for weeks before they knew they had such a terrible issue. This was also case in the U.S. And the testing required to keep a virus like this under control has been woefully under-carried. In fact its been utterly farcical and inept.

World history means little here. Containing a virus outbreak is down to the leaders at the time and the population. China have been obliterated in war several times from forces thought to be inferior to theirs, yet they have contained this virus (and others like SARS) due to the strength of their leaders and the servitude of their population. The population of the States don't suffer that sort of servitude, and unfortunately, have an absolute f***wit in charge at the absolute worst possible time. Hopefully the people below him make the right moves. State senators and mayors certainly seem to be, thankfully. I fear it won't be anywhere near enough. And if it isn't, millions could die.

The CBA is online. See if you can find the language.

MVP78: Finally found the paragraph that addresses this (one cited by an ESPN writer). He implied that this gives the commissioner the right tto end the season and end also any pay to players. (No wonder Boras wants the players tto stay in camp!)

Governmental Regulation–National Emergency

11. This contract is subject to federal or state legislation, regulations,

executive or other official orders or other governmental action, now or

hereafter in effect respecting military, naval, air or other governmental

service, which may directly or indirectly affect the Player, Club or the

League and subject also to the right of the Commissioner to suspend

the operation of this contract during any national emergency during

which Major League Baseball is not played.

Doesn't mention anything about paying players though. My guess is that they won't pay any players until the regular season starts. If a suspension occurred during the year, they'd continue to pay players at the normal rate.

I get the sense that some of you have no idea what's heading your way in the coming months.

yup. it doesnt help when the person supposed to be leading us constantly gives conflicting information. 1/2 the citizens believe there is a beautiful vaccine about to emerge (even though we cant even give citizens an actual test for the virus).....

your idea...you pick the first movie.

MLB does have a doomsday clause and at this point, they meet the criteria. If the season is canceled, the MLB will only have to pay players for the portion of ST attended and that’s about it

ok, but if there is no season....does the LT get reset for the Sox?

or will all contracts etc be put "on hold" and we will need to reset in 2021?

This clause isn't listed with the CBA posted online. Wonder where it comes from.

How long should we give people to watch this? A week?

a week sounds fair. if someone doesnt watch it by 1 week then they probably dont want to partake in the discussion.

That's why, I think, neither of us could find it. But ESPN (check the article) says this is the paragraph that gives the commissioner the right to cancel a season and all the contracts as well (meaning no one gets paid). (I guess thte equivalent of the 'force majeure' clause in the NBA. That's hte way he's reading it (hte phrase "any national emergency"). As I said earlier, we'll sure find out soon, because both sides will be interpreting this clause differently.

You seem to be lined up on the gloomy side of things. Many of the things you complain of us not doing are now being done with more steps considered. This is a process within our large country and it is a daunting challenge. From what I have heard and read, cases of the virus will be expressed throughtout the population and those people will be treated and hopefully efforts to reduce the spread will start to bear fruit. I expect to see this process take place over at least a month with the ability to project the life cycle to occur by the end of May. Thats a pretty scary proposition but not nearly as bad as the worst case scenarios being fostered on us by the fear mongers. Its a old story, never let a good crisis go to waste.

This IS a crisis, trust me. Not trying to paint an overly gloomy picture, but the picture is quite gloomy. Unfortunately the US was slow to act and remains slow to put in place the kind of restrictions that will be needed to cap this and flatten the curve below where it will overwhelm the hospital services our system is capable of providing. Unless folks understand the seriousness of this and behave accordingly we will be in for many months of rationing of care.
