Desperate Red Sox sign injured ex-Astros pitcher who benefited from sign-stealing scandal

In defense of that headline, he did manage to go 1 for 18 in 5 years with the Astros. Without the sign stealing, he could have easily gone 0 for 18...

Cost us Neck Tat.

Interesting to see if Hector gets picked up by anybody , other than the Monterrey Matadors . It's an informal gauge of whether the player is better than the 26th man on teams like Detroit. Beware the surging Marlins this year.

He's still got options remaining, so it's more like "is he better than the 40th guy on the roster".

I like Velazquez more than several players on the 40 man roster, now, but I'm not pretending to know more than the Sox brass.

He still has options left, so I prefer him over Brice & Lin.

I also like him more than Shawaryn and Weber, who both have multiple options remaining.

I don't know enough about Phillips Valdez, Chris Mazza and Matt Hallto make a choice.

I'm not complaining with this post- just mildly surprised by the choice of HV. Maybe they think he has the least chance of being picked up- due to his age, and he'll accept a minor league deal once he clears waivers.

Watching mazza pitch is just flat out painful.

How is he still on the team?

Velazquez at least looked good at times.

That is true. Unfortunately his stuff was all over the place. He could look really good vs. one hitter and really bad vs. the next hitter.

True, but I was thinking more about long stretches of looking good- like in 2017 and 2018.

He pitched very little in MLB in 2017, but after his first game on May 18th, he went

3-0 0.92 in 19.2 IP (.483 OPS against) 15K & 5 BB

2018 was up and down.

He started out 3-0 1.82 in his first 34.2 IP (decent sample size, especially if you add it to his last 19.2 IP from 2017.) A .735 OPS against is not all that great, so maybe he had some luck, but still. He looked promising on June 20th of 2018.

In his next 14 IP, he went 1-0 5.14 (8.29 OPS against).

It then got more choppy:

4 games 0 ER in 6.1 IP

9 games 5.48 ERA in 21.1 IP

Last 7 games, 2.08 ERA in 8.2 IP (6.10 OPS against)

2019 showed no signs of the 2017-2018 Velazquez.

His minor league numbers:

2016: 15-4 2.33 in 38 GS'd (228 IP counting fall league)

2017: 8-4 2.21 in AAA (102 IP)/ 1.86 ERS in 9.2 IP in Mexican league.

2018: only 1 IP.

The worry is that 2019 is the new normal.

Something a lot of us have been arguing about all winter. I still would've like to have seen the squad kept intact, with Mookie in a salary drive for one last go at it, especially now that the Yankees look as banged up as anybody again. At least then, things would've at least looked hopeful (even if they were actually doomed).

But we're all accepting our fate, now, with Sale down -- none of us are professional sports doctors (or even spin doctors) but can anybody anywhere anticipate a miracle comeback and any contribution from Sale's elbow this season, after already resting it for over half a year?

How can another week or two possibly make any difference?

I've often thought that many colleges offer a Freshman course called "Anti-logic 101" where anyone who takes the course gets stripped of every bit of common sense they might have ever had.

2019 might be wishful thinking for this sox team. The pen is not good to begin with and now they are gonna be abused.

2020 might be a tank in disguise LOL.
