Houck suffers from what a lot of hulking right handed pitchers with machine guns for arms suffer from. He lacks a reliable, controllable pitch that moves away from a lefty. The righties who can handle lefties best have circle changeups or have really solid 2 seamers which move away from the lefties. Also, there were issues about stamina and health with Houck. My bet is Bloom starts him off next year as a bulk guy to see what they have in him after a "hopefully" normal spring training

Rafael Devers has a .500 OBP during his current 14-game on-base streak, reaching base in 30 of his 60 plate appearances.

During that time (since 8/30), he leads the majors in AVG (.455) and leads the AL in hits (25) and XBH (10).

Don't count on it. The kid has swing and miss issues that he needs to improve on. He does have power, so there is hope. Did you see where one writer proposed using Ockimey as a platoon player with Dalbec?

In their last 5 games, Sox starters have a 1.04 ERA and a .128 opponent AVG (26.0 IP, 3 ER, 11-for-86).

I've been pushing Ockimey as a platoon for over a year... at least to give him a shot.

I don't expect record HR numbers, but to me, the K's are totally acceptable as long as he keeps his OBP at a respectable number.

Dalbec's OBP:

.352 MLB (71 PAs)

.362 minors

Notable comps:

Chavis .307/.325

Middy .272/.325

Mark Reynolds .328/.358

I'll take 350Ks, if he hits 30 HRs and has a .333 OBP.

He may end up with 35-40 HR potential and an OBP over .345.

Oh no chance he takes down Maris.

Also that platoon idea sucks because it has an AAAA player in Ockimey getting the bulk of the at bats...

It doesn't have to be a straight platoon, and Dalbec can get some time at 3B, or Ockimey at DH.

Ockimey would be more like the back-up 1Bman who only plays vs RHPs.

I have zero faith in Ockimey and finding a better LHH first baseman is not going to be all that difficult...

The Sox may be playing themselves out of an early pick. Baltimore may well finish behind the Sox. Who would have thought just 2 weeks ago.

The Sox are a much , much , much better team than the Orioles . It is kind of crazy that we are battling them to escape the cellar . But the whole season has been crazy in general.

Seems like we were reluctant to bring up the kids earlier this summer, but when they finally got here, they did not do that bad.

What's interesting about our "kids" is that many of our youngest players on this year's roster are not the prospects we just brought up:

Age Player OPS

21 Arauz .574

23 Devers .842

24 Grullon .833 (4 PA)

24 Verdugo .891

24 M Chavis .657

25 C Arroyo .896

25 Y Munoz .844

25 B Dalbec .1.008

25 Benintendi .442

Age Pitcher ERA

23 D Hern 2.84

24 Houck 0.00

26 M Hall 18.69

27 R Leyer 21.21

27 Pivetta 1.80

27 K Hart 15.55

27 Springs 7.13

The guys who may have a lasting impact brought from outside and currently on the roster include

Verdugo

Arroyo

Munoz

Pivetta

Valdez

The internal additions to our roster who have had an impact are

Houck

Dalbec

That represents 7 of 26 in my book and with Mata, Downs and Duran likely to make the jump next season plus a FA starter and several FA/Trade relief pitchers, and possibly a FA outfielder, we could see more than `1/2 the team changing from the beginning of 2020.

This team started in a real funk. I think the change in coaching as well as the weird Spring Training/Summer Camp dynamic really sunk this team early.

Not to mention being embroiled in a cheating investigation because of their former manger's involvement in a similar one with another team...

And losing oe of their best starters to TJ and another to COVID. This is not a last place team with a healthy Sale and ERod...

The idea that Weber would be able to stick in the rotation was definitely not a good one even if ERod had been healthy.

No Sale, no ERod, unloaded Price and Porcello. Bloom had his work cut out, to put it mildly.

I think nothing Bloom did surprised me more than how every time he needed to DFA a player, he found someone other than Ryan Weber. Granted, we probably won't miss anyone he DFA'd, but I don't think we would have missed Weber either..

We also had a bunch of guys who pitched worse than Weber, so I don't know why you'd single him out.

I think the Sox should have prepared for a season without Sale. It was obvious that there were huge injury concerns.

Because at the time, we were all wondering why players like Lakins would get dumped, when Weber was still on the 40 man. He seemed to be a guy you could sneak into your MiLB system. Weber seemed like the most obvious "just a guy" pitcher.

This was a lost season and a good one to tank.

Lakins was traded in January. I don't really see the connection with him and Weber, but roster management is admittedly not my thing.

If they really want to tank, the next 4 lineups should look pretty ugly. If they want to tank, Arauz, Puello, Chavis and Lin should be in every lineup. You can even keep JD in there too.
