People just can't stop citing numbers. Is it reasonable for Mookie Betts to ask for a top of the market contract? Is it reasonable for him to think he's worth more than Harper and Machado? Is it reasonable for him ask for Trout money two years after Trout signed and salaries have continued to rise? Is it reasonable to ask for the same AAV as Cole -- a pitcher who only plays once a week and who's only had three great years, while Betts has had five?

It's not unreasonable for Betts to ask for that much.

By the same token, it's not unreasonable for the Red Sox to not want to pay that much.

The Red Sox front office will never admit it, but it seems like every time they reportedly made a big offer to Mookie that it was still slightly below his market value at the time. I think fans would really like to see the actual numbers on Henry's futile "offers" -- to see just how much they were prepared to pay Mookie, and when, compared to other star salaries. All we heard was the last one they leaked to Merloni that in retrospect was a lowball offer compared to what others got, along with Mookie's highball counter offer.

I would think if Boston had actually tried to negotiate and meet him in the middle, that their high bid would've been the one that was leaked.

Let me put it another way.

If Mookie asks for the (second?) biggest contract in US pro sports history (which he reportedly did), is it unreasonable for Henry and Bloom to not offer it and see how free agency pans out?

Nope. There is a chance Mookie's gambit backfires a bit: what if his stats suffer in a new league, facing a lot of new pitchers, in a lot new parks... not to mention -- depending on The Investigation -- added tension from his new teammates and new hometown fans. Things could go badly for him... but I doubt many of us think they will.

As the Chief Negotiator for the company I used to work for has said in labor negotiations, "No, but God bless you for askin'. :)

Did you miss the post where I think 420 is reasonable for Betts? I don't think I would have given Harper his contract, because I just don't think he's close enough to Betts.

My bad. Nope. We agree. I sent the reply to the wrong post. And finally, if it's 420, how can it be bad?

I think you would also have to redefine the word "badly" for this situation. Unless Betts' career is prematurely ended by an injury, he is looking at a worst case scenario of $300 million. And I think we would all be surprised if it was that low...

Plus Paxton out until atleast May ? Judge already complaining about his shoulder

German is suspended. Stanton is Stanton...

Thought I read somewhere the “rebuild is complete” if so sure they have plenty of top prospects just as good

That's the stuff, don't lose your sense of humor.

Oh never to worry. I have a majestic sense of staying power. Relentless

Exactly.

And how many of them will call Henry out for being cheap and not extending Betts?

Betts asks for $420mill. And somehow Henry will be the unreasonable one...

... calling henry out here for being cheap and not extending Betts. I'm not really because I have been educated by the best talksox has to offer. We had absolutely no choice but to trade him. We got all that we could for him and undoubtably Verdigo when he recovers from his back fractures will make me forget all about Betts anyway. Plus I am just loving all these ultra cheap signing by Bloom of late. he is the man. Actually i do like the Pillar move.

agree. i dont know if we will "forget" about betts but your first sentence is spot on.

I think Slasher knows that.

But cp176 is definitely causing problems with his off the charts sarcasm LOL

We all would have liked to see Betts extended, but I can’t fault Henry if the story about Betts’ initial demands are true. Unless you’re buying the island of Aruba, I can understand not committing $420 million to anything without at least shopping around a bit...

I don't assume anything about Slasher's posts.

A high compliment coming from my Canadian neighbor. I appreciate you staying tuned.

@byJulianMack

Roenicke said they still don’t have a timeline on Verdugo. Said he’s running outside. Worth noting he threw for the first time since September yesterday.

Chris Sale’s progression Roenicke said is going well. Sox want to see Peraza at second this spring, but in the absence of Bogaerts early on, team could possibly shift him to short for now.

is this a prediction or are they playing breakfast baseball?

That depends on when you wake up. Game starts at 1:05 PM EST.

@harding_at_mlb

This could be an interesting comeback story. #Rockies bringing RHP Daniel Bard to Major League camp. Control issues ended his time with #RedSox in 2013. Last Minor League action was 2017 with the #Mets at the Rookie and Class A levels.

@jcmccaffrey

The other pitchers following McGrath to the mound today are: RHP Denyi Reyes, RHP Robinson Leyer, RHP Trevor Hildenberger, RHP Austin Brice
