I never said that I hoped that Price would not opt out. I said that hoping for him to opt out was absurd. Those are 2 very different things.

Whether or not they include Price with Betts, they will still get garbage in return.

Edit: Stripling is 30 yrs old and completely unaccomplished, Cartaya is a 17 year old kid, and Gonsolin is garbage too. I'd prefer to keep Mookie for 1 more year and get a draft pick than to take one of those guys.

Strippling, Gonsolin and Cartaya, by themselves, are all better than the comp pick.

All three together would be way better.

Gonsolin and Strippling are better than anything we have on the farm or just called up. Maybe DHern outdoes both of them, but as of now, both are better, IMO.

We may be able to get Ruiz & Gonsolin and maybe Strippling or Downs added on.

Dumping Price while taking nothing back (like Myers) would be a massive accomplishment in itself...

I've wanted that deal for a long time. Now that we have Moreland, we don't really need a 1Bman, but I'd still do it. I'd even give $3-4M a year.

Correct, but not so absurd now, is it?

...or:

"2020 May be the future, but you’re team isn’t gonna have a good 2020 without a damn miracle"

These are the kinds of statements that reiterate this one: "It's amazing how assumptions and expectations are almost always made based on the previous season... and how many times even expert pundits are wrong."

Bring on the pessimism -- or overconfidence, if you're a Yankme fan. But the 2020 Red Sox haven't given up until they trade Mookie.

Okay, we keep Betts, don't reset, miss the playoffs and get nothing for Betts. We suck for 3 years, instead of 1, and my guess is you'll blame Bloom.

The Red Sox advanced to the postseason four times over the past decade*, capturing two World Series titles, and winning a combined one game in the other two postseason trips.

How many trips to the postseason can the Red Sox expect in the upcoming decade? Should that influence the pending decision on Mookie Betts?

* over those 10 seasons the Red Sox ranked 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and 1 in Opening Day payroll

What a nonsensical question.

I’d only do it if SD also threw in a dirt cheap replacement for Price. On it’s own, the deal doesn’t clear enough for a reset, and having to replace Price with whoever not from the ill-equipped farm doesn’t make it easier...

1. None of the players Sox will get will be as good as Betts.

2. Whoever the Sox draft as a compensation pick is extremely likely to not be as good as any of the Dodgers coming back.

3. Stripling was an All Star in 2018. Cut him some slack.

4. It’s possible the entire point of dealing Betts is to reset and allow the Sox to position themselves to offer him a record-setting contract. Trade or not, rumor has it the only way to keep him off the market is with a 12 year $420 mill contract.

Stripling just turned 30 and has been in the bigs for 4 years. He makes $2.1M, this year and has 2 arb years left.

Career: 3.51 ERA (115 ERA+), 1.196 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 & 2.1 BB/9 (4.14 K/BB)

2019 was better in every category: 3.47, 1.147, 9.2, 2.0

AAA 3.15 in 20 IP (7.0 K/BB)

AA 3.24 in 161 IP (3.63 K/BB)

Gonsolin turns 26 in a few months and pitched in the bigs just last year. He's pre-arb.

2.93 ERA in 40 IP, 1.025 WHIP, 8.3 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 (2.47 K/BB)

AAA 5.44 in 41 IP-- 10.9 K/9

AA 2.84 in 44 IP--9.9 K/9

A+ 3.21 in 146 IP--11.1 K/9

Cartaya is very young but better promise than any young catcher we have in our system, right now.

Ruiz would be a good get.

For those of you who discounted Kevin Kennedy's comments re Verdugo:

By Ken Gurnick @kengurnick

January 3, 2020

LOS ANGELES -- One of the subplots to this offseason for the Dodgers is what to make of Alex Verdugo.

At the Children’s Holiday Party at Dodger Stadium last month, the outfielder said his “goal” is to be ready for Opening Day, certainly leaving open the possibility that he won’t. He suffered a back/oblique/core injury that cost him the final two months of the regular season and the Dodgers’ National League Division Series loss to the Nationals.

Verdugo went on to say that as he continues to rehab, he has not resumed any baseball activities. Maybe that’s why the Dodgers haven’t dealt Verdugo or Joc Pederson from a position where the Dodgers have a surplus. Club officials say there is no concern with the 23-year-old’s health long term, but initially nobody thought his injury was this serious.

“I think anybody that’s had something wrong with your back would understand,” Verdugo said. “Any activity you do, your back helps a lot. It’s a lot of frustration, but all I can do is stay positive. I’m going in the right direction. My goal is going to be starting Opening Day. We’ll just see how the days and weeks go and how I recover.”

Those anxious to move Betts do you still think it would be prudent for Bloom to trade Betts for package including Verdugo?

We'd need to just deal JBJ to reset- maybe for a 5th starter.

How about Price (+$3M x 3 yrs) and Chavis for Myers, Margot & Quantrill

We know he has a back issue. Kennedy said it’s congenital. This doesn’t back up Kennedy’s claim at all.

Misquote what Kennedy said was that he had concerns that it MAY be congenital. Judging by Verdugo own comments, he himself expressed concerns that it could be more serious. In any case given the facts presented by the Jan 3 article why would you trade Betts for a package including Verdugo?

Because not every back injury derails a career. If they really want to move Betts, a Dodgers package with Verdugo is still better than the Padres one.

Put more simply: What are the risks and what are the rewards of the Mookie Betts decision?

Personally I think they are readily apparent and already discussed in infinite detail.

Why would you accept such a deal when you do not know whether the back has healed. It sounds like the situation with Verdugo's back is still quite up in the air. Back injuries can be quite tricky. It seems like an unnecessary risk.

I’d have the trade contingent on a medical evaluation and trust my medical staff.

Yes the Red Sox medical staff has such an excellent track record. Let's take a chance, after all back injuries are so easy to evaluate and rehabilitate.

What makes you think it’s the same staff as when the Sox acquired, say, Pomeranz?

Ah, the old crack medical staff gimmick! Still funny after all these years!
