I'm actually encouraged about the Betts signing, even if it's only for one year (so far). The Sox gave him an arbitration record amount, and Mookie settled for less than Harper and Machado each made this past season (even though he's worth more).

This was a big day that could have ended badly if either or both sides were contentious. But it appears Boston is open to paying Mookie, while he showed he's not all about demanding every penny as rumored.

The chances Betts is a Red Sox in 2020 (at least through July) just increased, because he's now a 35% more expensive rental... Many clubs would gladly pay him 27 Million a year -- starting in 2021 -- but most likely not this season if that also includes giving up good prospects.

Mookie settled because he would not have made much more no matter what.

I don't think the odds changed at all. All clubs knew he'd get about $27-28M. Nothing changed after this deal was announced.

That’s a puff piece again. Betts HAD to talk about his arb price. That’s how it works. He couldn’t tuck tail and run with Boston having a year of control.

What this confirms to me, is that Betts is heading to market. He’s gone one year at a time for every year. He’s now guaranteed to have made $57 mil through his 3 arbitration seasons. That’s a life altering amount of money, one that I’m sure he could walk away after 2020 and be set for life. Hence, his downside for holding firm and hitting the market is low. His upside could be huge. Maybe he hits the market and comes right back to Boston. Maybe he doesn’t want to be in Boston and hopes for a higher bidder elsewhere. Not a soul knows. All we have heard is that Betts wants to go to the open market and that he has said he likes it in Boston. That’s about it.

There’ve been rumors he wants more than Trout. He’s never made that comment publicly. Maybe he wants a higher AAV than Trout? That’s possible. But he’s not getting 12 years

If anyone else agrees, I'll take it seriously and never diss the docs again.

Agreed. The arb avoidance means nothing. He'd have maybe made $500K to $1M more or less had he went to arb.

I project he gets $350M/10 or more from someone.

Harper got $330M/13. Machado got $300M/10.

I'd probably go as high as $350M/10 but would try to get $350M/11 or have some options at the end, so we could get out after 8 or 9 years, maybe something like this:

39M x 8 ($312M)

$20M option ($10M buyout) year 9

$18M option ($8M buyout) year 10

This comes to $312M/8, $332M/9 or $350M/10

If he says no, then we can feel content we offered more than a fair deal, and we'd hopefully spend that money elsewhere.

Not a soul knows, maybe not even Mookie. Maybe he's being advised different options by his agents than his family. Maybe he wants to play closer to home and chooses Atlanta or St. Louis. Or maybe he gets to free agency and just takes the most money, even if it's in Toronto, Canada.

Personally, I think it does matter how Betts feels he's being treated in Boston, and that the best chance he re-signs here is for him to remain a Red Sox this coming season while negotiations remain open and amiable throughout.

There are a lot of employees of the Red Sox who have forged positive relationships with the players from draft day through developmental years and into the majors, and that's a factor to be considered -- even for somebody rich who is already set for life.

Nobody is claiming he’s been mistreated. The whole arb process is very predictable. When it does go to arb it’s usually about a very small differential. I doubt Betts would have been upset with the Sox had they not settled pre-arb and he lost the arb.

If you really want the guy you go full court press. You keep him this year and treat him like gold. Then you take the same attitude in free agency that the Yanks did with Cole - we're not gonna be outbid.

i agree with your second sentence. IMO it doesnt matter how we treat him. we can trade him today or July 31 and it will have zero bearing on where Mookie signs his contract. that will be the "outbid" part of your post.

Frankly we're just making a bunch of assumptions about Mookie as if we know the guy like a best friend LOL
