Other than jacko, no one has suggested they won’t be competitive. Unless you’re one of those who believes spending heavily is the only way to compete...

Depends on the definition of competitive.

If the Red Sox intend to get under the luxury tax threshold, it will be hard to improve on an 84-win team that missed the postseason by 12 games (especially when three-fifths of presumed starting rotation has lingering injury concerns).

That's what makes the current Red Sox situation so interesting.

Bellhorn04 beat me to it.

Of course we can be a playoff team this off-season is far from over but but but if we trade Mookie for Punto we are in a world of s***

We won't, but it's really more about what we do with the savings.

After the Crawford, Beckett & AGon trade (dump) we signed Vic, Napoli & Dempster and watched a world of s*** turn to gold.

I'm not saying I'd be happy trading Betts with Price for scraps, but let's see how the off season plays out before we judge.

If there is a true mandate to reset, not many options will be pretty, in terms of 2020 expectation.

If Bloom trades Betts and Price and other key players in a dramatic effort to cut payroll then Sox total revenues will drop as they did from 2008 to 2009.

I'm not saying I like this trade, but here's one the simulator approved:

Betts & Price

for

Pollock, Maeda, Busch (minors 2B) & Cartaya (minors C)

I won't pretend I know much about prospects, especially on other teams, but here is how these two prospects compare to ours based on this site's assigned values:

10.3 Cartaya

7.6 Busch

12.1 Duran

10.6 DHern

8.5 Jimenez

4.5 Ward

3.6 Lugo

You're just pointing out that Bloom has been given a difficult job to do. To reset, he will have to trade quality assets, probably for lower quality replacements. Making these moves will obviously have consequences. Some people are clamoring for him to move quickly and then will probably complain when he does what is necessary. Whether it is Price, Eovaldi, Betts, JDM and/or JBJ, clearly some assets will go. It's up to Bloom to get the best value available for those assets while resetting. 2021 will then likely allow for more expenditures and reforming the team.

Well said.

This will be an interesting winter. There may be some bumps, but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

You guys are right .I too need to be more optimistic. In Bloom I trust until I don't and then we'll he's dead to me .

This is a difficult time for the Sox. Bloom is the right guy for this type of situation. Cut the guy some slack. He's not the one choosing to slash the budget.

Ugh. I don't like the logic of "The way to improve your team is to rid yourself of your best players."

No one of course has come right out and said that this team will not be competitive but for sure if some of the trade suggestions proposed here are followed it is really unlikely that they will be. Words like resetting and the constant concept of the need to get under the luxury tax limit right now don't instill great confidence in me. the suggestion that we might lose now but be stronger going forward has been suggested repetitively here as well. Tough job for Bloom - I hope that he is up to the task.

There will be a new CBA before the third year penalties kick in. The current thinking is that the players will never agree to a continuation of the current Lux Tax regime so the fears of that large a penalty are largely misplaced. In any case the growth in Red Sox revenue well out paces the financial burden of any potential lux tax. By not fielding a competitive team will likely have a more adverse affect on total revenues than any tax penalty.

this is the truth. The sky is not falling just yet.I think that the whole idea of a blockbuster rebuild is absolutely ridiculous. With respect to Betts, the dollar sign is what seems to be talked about the most here. Personally I would prefer to see us keep this potential generational talent for the long haul. People have bitched about the Bagwell trade on here - a trade that I was very much in favor of. A trade of Betts in no way compares to that one. Some here are just a little too resigned to the idea that we won't be keeping one of the top two talents in the game today in some some attempt to stay beneath a luxury tax limit which soon may not exist at all.

So far, I see no serious attempt by the Red Sox to get below the LT.

In case anyone missed this, here are quotes from the Red Sox actual GM (BOH) from the winter meetings:

"Winning is the most important thing. Winning is number one."

"What we're trying to do this offseason is number one make sure that we're in a position to contend in 2020 and to make the postseason and do some damage and see what happens."

“Our owners made it clear that we would love to get under the CBT (Competitive Balance Tax) threshold if possible, that’s a goal of ours. But we’re not going to do it at the expense of not putting the team on the field that our fans deserve”.

This means this whole reset idea is a goal not a mandate.

This is a walk back just in time for ticket sales. The actions thus far haven’t backed the above statement . If the goal was to be as competitive as possible in 2020, you’d have a closer, a second basemen, and a real fifth starter. Let’s put this as a wait and see approach.

The article is also entirely wrong when it comes to lux tax. They didn’t include medicals which are part of the calculation bringing the lux tax overage of $18 mil

So you want him to trade Betts for the underwhelming offers he has received so far?

Still December. Season doesn’t start for a full quarter of a year...

As Kennedy said.

But it’s also why the Sox didn’t go after Cole and Rendon.

Exactly what do you think Bloom should be doing, besides getting Ramirez and Ortiz?

Look I do not want him to do anything but put the best team on the field. I think this whole "get below the LT" is bull crap. If they trade Betts while they can still contend fans will revolt. So quit giving false choices. Bloom has a great rep but that all it is reputation. So far he has done Jack sh*t to justify all the hype around his hiring. The proof will be in results nothing more.

I do have a suspicion they may have floated the reset goal to see how fans reacted with ticket sales and are now reconsidering.

I more or less said more or less the same thing a month ago.

I don't think any of us expected that by Christmas they would have done virtually nothing.

I learned a long time ago to take everything coming out of the Red Sox Front Office with great skepticism. The are about as forthright as both politcal parties.

If you told me that in August, I don’t think I would have been too surprised. Their offseasons have puttered along at a glacial pace lately. And when you can’t add money, you have to wait for someone to help you subtract...

Reset or not, the Sox are clearly not adding payroll...

We can not be even sure of that because Betts will get a raise through arbitration so there actually could be a net payroll increase. Bloom has yet to do anything major that tips his hand other than letting Porcello walk which probably would have happened regardless of whomever was running Baseball Ops.
