In the past couple of years, I have been very optimistic about Pedroia's ability to come back and stay healthy and productive. At this point, I no longer have that optimism about him. I am sure that he will give it 100% effort to get back, but I just can't see that happening with his knees the way they are. As always, I'm pulling for the guy.

And yes, Machado is a punk.

If a normal job still had to pay a guy for two years, they'd find something for him to do, even if he couldn't do the job he was hired to do.

I was always a fan of Pedroia, however, at 36 and two years removed from playing and with a knee unlikely to handle the day to day stress of play, the Sox had better plan for a full time option at 2nd base. Will it be Chavis, Hernandez, Chatham or other? Don't know but we would be kidding ourselves to expect Pedey to fill the job in 2020.

I'm expecting 0 innings or PAs from Pedey, but we're paying the guy, so I'm fine with him hanging on. It's not like he's blocking anyone special or taking away a 40 man roster spot from someone worth holding onto.

I don't think the Sox are going to plan on getting much from Pedroia. At the same time, I also don't think they are going to go out and sign a full time 2nd baseman. IMO, it will be an internal option, likely Chavis, getting most of the at bats.

True, but Pedey's presence has nothing to do with our choices for the 2019 2B job. If we didn't have Chavis, Lin, Marco and Chatham, we'd be acquiring someone. It's not Pedey holding us back.

Pedey has earned the right to try. I think Henry and most Red Sox fans respect that. One unintended consequences of his being in camp' busting his butt to make the team, will be he will be a positive role model for the younger players. As the late Jimmy V said "Don't give up Don't ever give up!" And I say don't bet against Dustin Pedroia.

We have no pop outside of Chavis at 2b last year .I can’t fathom another wasted year at this position.Chavis can spot start there but he’s far from the full time 2b we need .Chavis should be a utility player taking some of holts at bats going forward .Yes I want to have Genette there Flame away .Sogard has done a decent job not much pop though .

The odds are very long we spend more than a penny more at 2B than what we do now.

We have budget issues.

We have higher needs than 2B:

1) SP

2) RP

3) OF (to replace JBJ)RP

4) 1B (Chavis does not provide the offense needed at 1B)

5) RP

6) Back-up catcher (assuming Leon is non tendered)

7) 4th OF'er, especially if JBJ's replacement is questionable

8) SP depth

9) 2B

I have 2B about 7th to 9th on our needs list, and we may only be able to address 2-5 on the list, and that's going to be hard to do with frugality.

I keep saying it: with all the shifting and launch angles, second base just isn't that important a position any more.

That doesn't mean Sox fans should ever minimize the contributions of Dirt-Dog Pedroia -- the best second baseman in franchise history, at least as far back as Bobby Doerr (rhymes with Orr). I'm not happy about the struggles of his last few years, and the controversies -- I didn't like the rumors that he applauded Price in the Eck airplane ambush... but that could show he's a good teammate, siding against an old-timer who gets paid to judge young-timers on the air.

What definitely shows Pedey was a good teammate is that when he could barely walk he was sitting in the middle of the diamond in a folding chair during practices, giving tips to his fellow infielders (the guys that were replacing him).

Gennett sort of exploded into relevance and faded away just as quickly. Sogard is a journeyman utility infielder. I’m not sure how much of an upgrade either is over Chavis at the plate...

As far as Pedroia's contract, it sucks that it has become totally dead weight (though it will never be as bad as paying Vaffanculo Panda to go back to SF).

But Sox fans forget that Pedey took a hometown discount to stay longterm in Boston. When he signed in 2013 he was one of the AL's top two second basemen; Robinson Cano finished 5th in the MVP voting and Dustin placed 7th (and, as the highest Red Sox on the ballot, was in effect the regular season MVP for the world champions).

Gold Glove Pedroia signed for $110 million... six months later, PED Cano signed for $240 million.

I never forgot, and don't feel so bad about his contract because of that fact.

Small list of players I would deal Devers for.

But a Devers/Juan Soto deal would be nice. Nationals replace Rendon and the Red Sox replace Betts (assuming he is getting dealt, of course)

Kind of a wash isn't it?

Except that the Sox have better 3b prospects than OF prospects...

That would probably be a major reason to do it.

Soto is a beast. We might have to add another player to get the Nats to do it.

Plus, doesn't Soto have more years of team control?

No idea what else would have to be included, if anything.

FWIW, baseballtradevalues.com gives Devers a trade value surplus of $129million and Soto a surplus value of $132million, meaning a 1 for 1 swap is actually close enough to equal.

But Soto has that whole "World Series Hero" thing going on, and trading him away, even for Devers, would make Nats GM Mike Rizzo the second most unpopular man in DC...

And Devers is pretty popular with Sox fans.

I'm thinking 5 years of Soto>4 years of Devers, not that I want to trade Devers.

Also, Soto did what Devers did but 2 years younger.

They both still have upside, which is scary!

Both are great players .I just like Devers the person and player a tick more .

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying about acquiring someone like Scooter, I just don't see it happening.

I do, too, but probably because I've watched him for years.
