Marc James on EEI said that Jeff Passan told him (cannot find the tweet) that the punishment for the Sox will be more severe than the Astros punishment because they were second time offenders. He was talking about 2 1st and 2nd rounders as well as IFA penalties.

Very possible. But let's have them found guilty first...

At that point, why not. The benefit of dropping back is the draft selections and if you lose 2020 and 2021 picks, then go for the gusto and rebuild for the 2022 draft

this is pretty good observation. this very well may be why we havent seen any trades yet to dump salary. or not.

I'm just feeling a little anxious about the OF depth and LHB 1B. They need to figure that out if they want to compete this year.

I'm telling you. 4 moves

1. Trade Bradley for Jake Lamb. The Diamndibacks depth chart lists Ketel Marte as starting at both 2B and CF. Lamb is their backup 1B/3B and makes $5mill. But he crushes RHP when healthy. This trde does make sense for both teams.

2. Sign Yasiel Puig. If he accepts the MLBTR prediction of 1 year $8mill, he becomes a wild card gamble who could either carry or kill this team.

3. Sign Jeremy Hellickson.

4. Sign Cesar Puello. The Sox will need a 4th outfielder/Puig insurance. Puello's defensive metrics are outstanding for his limited time. If he can maintain them in the event Puig goes nuts, it will be worth it.

5. Trade Eovaldi for Rougned Odor. (Optional move.) Bad contract swap. Odor can play 2B and swat home runs. This move likely means Tzu-Wei Lin struggles for a roster spot. If Puig was more stable, Lin could just be the 4th outfielder seeing limited action. Or maybe Puello signs a MiLB deal.

The Sox would have to DFA 3 players, Ryan Weber is the obvious one. Chris Mazza, Matt Hall, and Jeffrey Springs are also at risk. (And I would put Ryan Brasier in this category as well.)

Boom. Holes filled. And I think the Sox cut about $7mill towards the cap as well.

Still over the cap though? I'm fine with that approach. It's not my money.

I'm fine with it, too. Although trading for Odor might be going to far. Hellickson can just sign another MiLB deal and come up when Eovaldi gets hurt...

While I was impressed by Bloom during the recent press conference, it is hard to figure out where the club is going. Until they name a manager (recent reporting seems to indicate they do not feel any need to do so before the start of ST) I just don't see them making any significant moves. Other reporting indicates Boston is asking too much for either Price or Betts or both to make any deal likely. So we are stuck in watch and wait mode. The question arises are the Red Sox beset by paralysis by analysis?

Seriously, if the sox lose their first two picks in 2021, then they should blow past the limit for 2020. Eviscerate the top tax level. The penalty will be their third rounder moves back 10 spots. Who gives a f*** about that. And yeah, it's not your money, and if JH wants to make this right, he will. Spend for 2020. Jump below the top tax line in 2021. Reset and rebuild in 2022

I need to see Bloom get through a whole season before I can really judge his performance.

Cora is named a lot more often than anyone else in the Astros report. If Hinch got 1 year, Cora is getting more IMO.

The reason for that is simple: Manfred gave Astros players immunity if they named superiors -- the feds let mob underlings go state witness to take down the kingpins.

And how stunning the guys they named over and over were a coach and a player that no longer work for Houston.

The Astros didn't throw Cora and Beltran under the bus; they buried their carcasses under a Greyhound station.

Exactly what is the analysis you think is paralyzing them?

The high asking price for Price/Betts simply means they prefer to keep both, but can be bought if an offer arises.

I think the paralysis is financial. The problem with trading Price (the preferred departure) is in the long run, that probably nets nothing in the way of a salary cut. The problem with trading Betts is it makes competing more difficult.

Henry has made mutliple contradicting statements that basically all point to cutting costs. The paralysis is a financial one...

Hey, it's like that everywhere I've worked in my life. Any problem that arises after someone leaves was clearly all his or her fault. You can use that one for a good 4 months...

My last CEO used that for 5 years. He's probably still blaming the previous CEO for everything to this day.

I can't get enthused about signing Yasiel Puig. This guy is a disaster waiting to happen. He has a long history of hamstring issues and an equally long history of being traded after being involved in on-field brawls. He has the potential to be an embarrassment to the organization when he's unhappy and it doesn't appear to take a lot to make him unhappy.

No thanks.

Eh. It's not like we have been drafting very well anyway. Since 2012, the only Sox first and second rounders to even make the majors are Benintendi, Chavis, Sam Travis, and Michael Kopech, The first and second round in 2012 did produce 4 future major leaguers, but they were Deven Marrero, Brian Johnson, Pat Light, and Jamie Callahan. Not going to miss them.

And that's top rounds of the last 9 drafts in a nutshell...

Oh all that and probably lots more.

But he is also a mega talented player when healthy with a monstrous Fenway swing and a throwing cannon that makes Jackie Bradley look like Johnny Damon trying to throw with his weak arm.

The main problem with not fielding a contender is that it is our money as far as supporting the club. Fans will still take in a game or two at Fenway because it's a fun thing to do outside when the weather is nice. But the big loss of revenues -- and I think this has been said -- will be with NESN. It's just too easy to turn off four-hour games that don't matter.

If Puig is too crazy or too expensive or both, another option would be trying to get Billy Hamilton on a cheap deal.

But at that point I just gamble on Puello...

Are they not in a hurry because they haven't decided what they want to do or are they not in a hurry because they plan to stand pat. Or are they not in hurry because they are waiting for the final shoe to drop. Whatever it is the recently leaked reporting that Kennedy claims they can go into Spring training without naming a new manager is deeply disturbing. This leads me to believe that they may have no clear consensus of where they are going, hence the paralysis by analysis.

Bloom is now in charge and my bet is, his organizational drafting policy came with him.

How do you think it differs?

Just about every possibility is on the table at the moment.

1. Probably believe they can stand pat and compete, but will wait and see if a good offer comes up.

2. They think they can go to ST without naming manager because they are only looking internally and maybe want to see how the internal guys stack up day to day.

Bloom's big plan is to leave via gorilla suit at some point?

Bloom took over in October 2014.

2015 Draft Picks

1. Garrett Whitley- still alive as a prospect

3. Brandon Lowe- 3rd place ROY 2019

2016 Draft Picks

13. Nate Lowe- solid big league debut in 2019

2017 Draft Picks

1- McKay- 2 way player, solid debut in 2019

2018

1- Matt Liberatore- dynamite prospect, top 50 now and just dealt to StL

1- Shane McClanahan- still a good prospect, not top 100

IFA notables

2017- Wander Franco- currently #1 prospect in baseball

He doesn't knock every pick out of the park in the draft, but his top picks have counted

All the more disabling, if the Sox lose multi-year top 2 picks and some IFA money. When the bombs fall, if they do, the selection of Chaim and his experience could be deeply discounted.
