Clearly the Mets dialed the wrong number. Later this week, expect them to announce their new manager Dusty Barker...

I think the Sox are stuck waiting on the investigation. If Roenicke has a part in it, then he’s gotta go too. They’ve got two options

1. Wait for investigation and have a blended staff with leftover coaches and maybe an outside manager or bench coach and promote the other position from within

2. Purge all coaches from last year now and build your staff from the ground up

No point in considering Roenicke right now if he’s at risk to get suspended too

If Roenicke gets suspended, it wouldn't be the first time an MLB had to switch managers during the year. Maybe they can get a little Morgan Magic this year?

The only reason you don't go with Roenicke for now is if you are worried about taking another PR hit.

Screw PR.

Not having a team and manager causes a ticket sales hit. Much, much worse...

Exactly. Go with the flow.

What’s the record for number of managers used by a single team in a single calendar year? If things break wrong for this team, they could challenge it...

Just promote Roenicke and move on. He’s been around the league and even managed teams before without any cheating scandals...

so if electronic sign stealing methods were in place for the red sox during either 2018 or 2019 you would still be OK with roenicke managing the Red Sox?

No, but until it’s confirmed they are, why stand still? Deal with that situation when it’s ofgicial

i think if they did that the Red Sox FO would be the laughing stock of the sports world. IMO.

Nah. They are a long ways away from LOLMETS territory. Though they did attempt to go there with the BV hire in 2012.

If they were in place during 2019, why did they suck balls?

If Roenicke doesn't get the job, that could signal that the Sox have a problem. He seems to be the logical stand in decision, but if the Sox truly had an electronic sign stealing system, he would have known about it and participated.

If he's hired as the manager, I would venture to guess that the Sox are in the clear.

All the stolen signs in the world can’t turn Hector Velasquez and Ryan Weber into quality starting pitchers...

Unlike ourselves, the FO/Ownership can dial Roenicke's cell phone and get the answer now. My guess is they have done it and determined that at best, Ron R. knew the system and did not have the standing to stop it, or perhaps he did for 2019 since the performances dropped off notably. I do agree that if Roenicke got picked as manager tha the Sox are clear of problems. That is why I don't think they will be able to hire him, and that may be for the best also. Clean house of all involved or close to the situation may be a "reset" type action but it is very late in the offseason to replan ST workouts and drills. The overall morale of this bunch will be interesting to observe.

All of this is predicated on the Sox being guilty. That might be the case, but it also might not. That the Sox have not talked to any external candidates that we know of and were last rumored to only be looking internally makes me think this “scandal” is having minimal impact on their search and Cora was fired as a PR move...

Posted
Cora was fired because he was getting a multiple season suspension anyway.

I certainly don’t consider Boston firing him an admission of guilt. The Mets fired Beltran for even less...

I thought a single season suspension would be their limit.

Cora is named a lot more often than anyone else in the Astros report. If Hinch got 1 year, Cora is getting more IMO.

if he setup the same system in Boston in 2018 I expect lifetime ban.

I don't believe the allegations are the same.

I don't know, a year is pretty stiff in itself. And it's not like the punishment is going to be exactly in proportion to the severity of the offense. It's pretty arbitrary.

Marc James on EEI said that Jeff Passan told him (cannot find the tweet) that the punishment for the Sox will be more severe than the Astros punishment because they were second time offenders. He was talking about 2 1st and 2nd rounders as well as IFA penalties.

It is stiff, but I think the fact that it's "arbitrary" means that they are going to make an example out of Cora.

If that's true, JH will need to stay above the tax cap for a long while.

At that point, why not. The benefit of dropping back is the draft selections and if you lose 2020 and 2021 picks, then go for the gusto and rebuild for the 2022 draft

this is pretty good observation. this very well may be why we havent seen any trades yet to dump salary. or not.
