I remember feeling so dejected after the third loss. That 2003 team was something special, and I felt they'd show it in 2004.

They shocked me and the world!

I'm not sure, if I've ever been happier than after that final out in the World Series.

And in retrospect, you have to love the boldness of Millar with his 'Don't let us win this game' bravado before Game 4.

Maybe this date means the Yanks will not have to return to Houston on Saturday. That Tanaka requires lots of relief pitchers, and lots more, starting in inning one, tomorrow night.

I'm aware that "some folks" won't agree with this but I've always given Millar a lot of credit for that WSC. He presented a positive attitude and stressed that they only had to win one game. Each day. And he outlined the plan.

I totally agree.

While many players have said similar things like, "We'll take one game at a time," Millar's attitude was genuine bravado. He was relaxed and confident, and it rubbed off on others.

There were others on that team that contributed to the chemistry needed to pull off that type of comeback vs a damn good team. It was just the right mix. Even Manny's playful child-like attitude along with calm intensity helped.

I also agree. Not only were the 2004 Red Sox an incredibly talented team, but they were mentally tough and could obviously handle being down 3 to 0 on the biggest stage in baseball (more people watch the Red Sox v. Yankees in the ALCS than watch the World Series). Millar played an indispensable role in the mental toughness of that historic team.

Roberts got all the glory, but Millar started the whole rally with a walk. If not for Millar, Roberts had no one to pinch run for...

He did, for sure, and there were other that played similar and varying roles- all important.

People like Kevin Millar are very useful in energizing the people around them to lighten up and get hard work done, whether sports or everyday life. He was and still is a treat to listen to on his show. I don't know if the 2019 Red Sox had such a personality to wake them up . Probably Brock Holt would seem to be the closest. I suspect there was some friction between various players. The 3 OF'ers who danced their way through 108++ wins in 2018 did not seem like such good buddies in 2019. Ever see JBJr smile ?

All of our WS Championships have been fun, but nothing will ever top 2004.

Nope, that ALCS was so amazing, the WS series sweep was sort of an afterthought.

Now down 3-1 to the Astros , and facing Verlander, our contributor from NY gets a chance to see how his well constructed team fares in a gut check game. The result could be fun to watch, if a Yankee failure concludes their season.

Heh heh...not for me...I stayed nervous right up until the final out.

reminds me of the 1980 USA hockey team. the win vs USSR was so amazing we forget they still needed to beat Finland in the final to win gold medals.

Yup, same type of feeling.

Nervous?

If not for my vested interest in watching an 86 year drought end, it was actually probably the most lopsided World Series in history. Not only did the Sox never trail at any point in the World Series, there was only one inning that ended with the two teams tied, and that was the 6th inning of game 1 before the Sox took a lead they would truly never relinquish the following inning. The Sox jumped out to a lead in the first inning of all four games.

I was nervous with anticipation, but that was a series I never really felt was in doubt...

YES! And, we're 4-0 in World Series appearances since that magical 2004 season.

Call it paranoia, I guess. But the Red Sox were a team that taught me that it really ain't over till it's over.

We had a 3-0 lead in Game 7 of the '75 Series.

We had a 2-0 lead in the 7th inning of the '78 playoff game.

We had a 3-2 lead in games and a 5-3 lead with 2 outs and nobody on in the 10th inning of Game 6 in the '86 Series.

We had a 5-2 lead in the 8th inning of Game 7 of the '03 ALCS.

Also, the '04 ALCS didn't look to be in doubt after the 3rd game either.

Much better, yes.

Those losses were heart breakers.

I really thought we were better than the Mets, so that one hurt a lot.

Bucky Freakin' Dent was a killer.

I'm glad the memories are brighter the last 2 decades.

And we lost all that without playoff mega-jinx Kenny Lofton on our roster...

When ppl ask if I watch porn I say yes and refer to this series.

Legit this was onew of the biggest reasons I became a fan. I was 16 (I think) at the time and just starting to really like baseball, this series changed my life and I was hooked after. I'll never forget that moment.
