"This focus on [the] CBT resides with the media far more than it does within the Sox," said Henry. "I think every team probably wants to reset at least once every three years -- that's sort of been the history -- but just this week ... I reminded baseball ops that we are focused on competitiveness over the next five years over and above resetting to which they said, 'That's exactly how we've been approaching it.'"

We can f***ing stop wasting another 25 pages on different trade scenario to reduce payroll that Henry now says is not needed. Move on boys.

Just read henry's comments myself. I'm not surprised at all. There is no way in hell that he would let this team flounder for a season hoping that it will provide a brighter future. He is the owner and I think he gets it. Chaim wasn't brought in to do what most of our prolific posters here felt was the inevitable. I feel better than I have in months about this years team.

No action to back the words.

The only real downside here is the lack of improvement.

While Bloom might not trade away anyone that will make the team worse (Betts, Bradley, Price), he also doesn’t appear to be able to add anyone who will make the team better, as evidenced by the inability to sign Travis Shaw to a $4mill contract...

There are some available relievers who could help— Strop and Jeffrey. For starting depth, Nova, Hellickson, and Walker among others are still available.

Bloom may not have liked Shaw, even if he had $4M to spend. I gotta think he'd have signed a few guys already, if he had a budget to work with.

The story was there was interest...

I would avoid Jeffress.

But some other relievers that I think have varying levels of intrigue include Vizcaino, McHugh, Cingrani, Holland, Swarzak, and Minaya. Also it’s probably time someone converted Drew Smyly to relief duty.

On the starter front, don’t forget about Clay Buchholz..

I’d like to forget him.

You’re not alone among Sox fans there. But he’s risky enough that no one will give him a major league deal and talented enough to be an impactful depth signing. Don’t forget that unless something major happens, this team employs Nate Eovaldi as a starter. Depth is essential...

I've always like Buch as minor league depth. Where's Kimmie when I need her? :D
Two problems with Buch as a depth option. First, when the time comes that you need to call on him as an injury replacement, it is likely that he will be unavailable due to injury. Second, he has not performed well for a long time even when he has been healthy.

He pitched great in 2018, albeit for half a season.

I totally agree, and while signing to a minor league deal can't hurt, I'd like us to sign healthier and more reliable pitchers.

Well, there's Andrew Cashner.

Bloom is being hampered by the tax, of course.

The Red Sox will pay 62% tax on payroll between 228 mill and 248 mill.

So a 4 mill addition is actually a 6.5 mill addition.

I'd rather go with an opener than Cashner or Buchholz.

If they sign Buchholz, it would very likely be just a minor league deal...

i mean, you know he is just walking back his original directive to appease fans like yourself, right?

the reset is happening. 2020 was already murdered by DD.

Sorry, but you can't let Henry off the hook. He could have said no to any of those FA signings or trades.

The sign Buchholz club lives on...me, Slasher, Dewey, notin, and Kimmi if she was here.

Seems like the club keeps shrinkng, just like Buch's chances of ever playing in BOS again.

I bet they sign him in 2021 for the WooSox and they trot out a greatest hits of former PAW players just to bring the fans in. Think Sam Horn can still hit a few dingers? Maybe they can make Rick Lancellotti the coach?

well, we need cheap pitching. Clay would be cheap pitching. so what if it's only for 10-15 starts.

this is a no-brainer.

sign Clay!

But he was also probably assured a better ROI
