OK. so this July you do it then? i am confused on your stance.

Torres is not a prospect anymore, if one part is missing I'd place almost everybody on the table for him. If the price is right go for it

Outside of an injury to Cole, in the offseason, there is literally no hole that would necessitate such a desperate decision now

Just read the mlb.com piece on the sox and their plans. The sox are currently $19.4 mil over the final threshold. JBJ won't be enough to reset this year

They have to trade JBJ and Price, at minimum.

They "may" be able to offload JBJ without including money, although I do wonder if the decision to tender him was a bad one. I do wonder how much of Price's deal they'd have to eat. To get under the window, the sox would need to offload $8.5 mil of Price's deal to sneak under after dealing off JBJ. They would need to return no major league talent above minimum money and would need to not replace Price. As bad as Price was last year, replacing him with a Brian Johnson will destroy the sox chances of being relevant. That being said, there is a quote that Bloom made that makes me wonder about the rebuild.

Bloom is quoted in the mlbtr piece as saying “But so much of what we’re always going to be trying to accomplish, but certainly now, is to make sure we have as strong a farm system as possible.”

This is obvious for any team, but saying this for a team that is offloading salary speaks towards a tear down

And Betts and Eovaldi and Beni and ERod and...

Team needs a whole teardown and won’t compete for decades!

I just posted in another thread that Bloom might shave it down to 2 seasons, so clearly that is not the path I am getting behind.

A trade of David Price for Wil Myers makes too much sense with the annual $17+ million AAV savings for luxury tax purposes. Myers may not be an attractive return but his AAV provides a heightened benefit to the Sox.

Perhaps the San Diego Padres would balk at the deal.

Or not.

He said that in reference to the idea of including any prospects to facilitate a trade of Price.

My take is that they want to accomplish the payroll cutting without losing prospects in the process. That doesn't equate to a tear down.

Sox don't want Wil Myers. He doesn't hit for average and strikes out a ton. His defense is also below average. No, No, No!

Famous last words.

And the San Diego Padres don't want David Price, certainly not with a $96 million price tag.

According to Baseball Trade Values, a trade of David Price and Jackie Bradley Jr. to San Diego for Wil Myers and Manual Margot would be a moderate overpay for the Padres:

... but would apparently get the Red Sox under the luxury tax threshold, avoiding up to $100 million in long-range consequences:

San Diego was paying Myers $5mill per year. Now in the last 3 years, he is due $22.5mill each year. He is also their fifth outfielder and highest paid outfielder.

They will not balk on any deal...

Sox fans need to be patient. Bloom is good and he will make some creative moves. The team will look a lot different at the end of January from what it is now.

Price and devers to Atlanta for most of their top 10 prospects and we are gold.

Ps: Martinez to Texas for a bag of used baseballs and bloom can go shopping!

Sox have added $9 mil in guarantees today. Now they will need to shed $28 mil from the docket to get under
Duh! Don't you think they realize that Captain Obvious?

we were having a discussion about the trading deadline. specifically the 2019 deadline when the obvious need was SP but was not addressed.

right. but my point was that last July the NYY had one very obvious and glaring weakness. i could even make an argument that if they had addressed that weakness by trading part of the Farm you guys would be raising a Flag on opening day. nothing was done last July so i was wondering what would make this July so Different? i still haven't seen a good reply / reason. dont get me wrong...i am thrilled cashman sat on his hands last July. shocked. but thrilled. it sealed your 2019 fate.

Cashman has been hoarding prospects and making big signings to fill gaps.

Cashman = Cherington
