"fans expect absolute top tier prospects for the right to pay Betts $30mill for one year."

It's not just fans, but a lot of professionals. I can only hope that Chaim Bloom doesn't rely on a website that only evaluates possible deals with a dollar sign.

Just today, Red Sox reporter John Tomase posted an article about the possibility of a Betts trade to LA. Here are the names he listed: Verdugo, Ruiz, Downs, Grey and Gonsolin. Here's the last line from a writer who gets paid to speculate: Any two of these players would make the start of an intriguing package...

I like the idea of dumping Price and or Eovaldi better

Sure. But we'll have to eat a chunk of money.

There are no options that are going to be especially pleasant.

I like the Price for Myers type idea

This is not an endorsement of John Tomase's opinion.:)

Has Tomase ever been right about something like this?

When was the last time a one year player was traded for multiple top 100 prospects and no money? Even the lopsided Aroldis Chapman deal - excused by its importance to ending a century-long title draught - doesn’t meet this criteria.

Don’t like the finance-based website? Fine. But what has history shown you?

Do you actually like it, or is it just not as bad as some of the other options?

I like the money saved, and we need a 1Bman. Myers might rebound.

I'm on record as wanting to keep Betts for the entire 2020 season -- no matter what happens in the winter of 21 -- because having a top-five MLB player entering his prime in the lineup gives Boston a much better chance of contending than a package of might-be's or never-were's that may not even play in the majors next year. I also think keeping him until he is officially free is the only way he'll possibly re-sign here.

I'm also on record as saying if Bloom is shopping Betts, I would expect the asking price to be commensurate with an MLB star's production. I also understand that most clubs won't feel that giving up top prospects for a one-year rental getting paid 30 mil will be worth it.

I have read a lot of proposed trades for Betts on this forum and other websites, including professional organizations. Everyone is entitled to opinions. Mine is that at least some of the pros have more knowledge of what has happened, is happening and may happen in the sport that they cover for a living than the fans.

As for history, this case may just be a precedent, since we all keep saying it only takes one club to pull the trigger on what looks like -- to some -- a major overpay. But history tells us we probably won't get anything good, so I expect any trade of Mookie Betts to be a major downer and lead to a disappointing 2020 for most Sox fans. Longterm, we can only hope the Red Sox don't make a mistake that falls somewhere between Ruth and Bagwell.

Another question is, who would the Dodgers be bidding against for Betts? If the Dodgers are the only team seriously interested, why should they give us a big haul?

Especially if they think we're a little desperate about doing this to get under the 208 million mark.

The Dodgers would be bidding against the Red Sox, who would be better off keeping Mookie. For instance, if the two clubs returned for a World Series rematch, and LA had Betts, that means Boston would not. The Dodgers would also be bidding against all other contenders who are trying to improve by recruiting other players. LA is also one of the few clubs that could offer and spare good prospects to get to the top of their current window. Plus, Bloom and Friedman once worked together, and reportedly still have a good relationship, making a match for a deal more likely.

And really, right now as far as I know, the Dodgers are just a hypothetical trade partner. Does anyone know if they’re actually interested? And to what level?

They’re a good guess - a team perennially on the cusp possibly looking for that one piece. But no one saw Cincinnati as the trade destination for Trevor Bauer, and the Dodgers made a lot of sense for him, too. Has any team overtly expressed any interest in Betts?

It's all rumors AFAIK.

Of course, it must be said that the Red Sox front office has sent out multiple signals of the possibility of Betts being traded.

It’s still entirely possible that it gets more discussion on this forum than in Bloom’s office...

All the more reason why teams need productive minor systems that can crank out quality pitching and hitters.

Ours is above average with hitters and bullpen pitchers, but rock bottom in supplying starters.

hard to imagine this one considering our history of producing top quality starters year after year - omg what forever shall we do

If Pomeranz gets $34M/4, I think Porcello will make much more than many here think he will get.

You think so? That's an easy one. He averages out to a 200 inning Pitcher, never hurt. Go to National League, with a Big Park, he's a steal at 10 Million a year for 4 years. He'll just turn 31, in Dec.

Pomeranz went to a Park that is safe for him. Only did something for a little while this year. Pomeranz just turned 31, a few days ago. He stunk as a Starter in SF, (an excellent Pitchers Park), only when he was moved to BP, he did a little.

This is a No Brainer.

GM's in Baseball should follow us common folks, who have to Budget.

The phrase if it's too good to be true, then it isn't.

Happy Thanksgiving! Have a wonderful Day!

Those questioning the Pomeranz money know that he was the best reliever in baseball in the second half last year, right? He was better than Chapman. Better than Hader. Better than everyone. He found his velocity again and his breaking ball in shorter outings became just lights out

I was ready to counter with Nick Anderson, the lights-out Ray acquired by Bloom and Co, but...

2nd Half: Anderson 2.28 ERA, .180 BA, 52 Ks in 27.2 IP, 0.75 WHIP

2nd Half: Pomeranz 1.96 ERA, .161 BA, 57 Ks in 36.2 IP, 0.81 WHIP

I saw a Pomeranz start in person vs. Washington in the Spring and he was brutal. What a turnaround, even if it was in the NL. The fact that he was bad for over a year-and-a-half should remind both Red Sox and Yankee fans of how quickly change can come for professional pitchers.
