MLBTRs...

Andrew Benintendi put on some weight last winter in an attempt to add more power to his game, though in the wake of a down year, the Red Sox outfielder tells WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford that the new goal is “to get lighter and more athletic this offseason.” Many tabbed Benintendi to break out into superstardom in the wake of his impressive 2018 season, though he ended up hitting only .266/.343/.431 over 615 PA in 2019. Some nagging injuries played a role, though Benintendi’s added bulk didn’t translate into more power, as he posted a lower slugging percentage and fewer homers (13) than in 2018. Benintendi is hoping that better health and a more back to his old speed-based game will result in a better 2020 season.

Certainly, in terms of how they left their state of affairs for the next GM.

IMO, also in terms of the job that they did while here.

He had a brief spell when he was hitting very well and started to hit with some power. Then he lengthened his swing and lost his hitting feel. Maybe a new hitting coach will do as well for him as getting lighter.

LOL.

I could see keeping Devers, Bogey, D Hern and seeing what's offered for the others.

Not sure what's funny...

Guys with contracts other than Vaz and Xander are hard to trade. Why would we trade Xander and Boz anyway?

If we are in a rebuild, do it and get it over with.

We still have bunch of guys under team control.

I would trade to get younger players that would all 'arrive' at the same time. Maybe it's 2022 or 2023.

You're telling me we can't win next year. If so, why keep Betts? Why keep JD? Why keep JBJ?

That's why management makes the big bucks. Making tough calls.

Okay, for one, I didn't think you meant keeping all the guys listed as signed. I thought you meant trade (or offer up) every one but Devers.

Secondly, we have a ton of players with 3 arbs left or pre-arb, so I thought you meant them, too.

On the search to replace DD, one thing I did not realize was that Friedman's contract with the Dodgers runs out this year and he hasn't signed a new one yet. Maybe Henry throws some crazy money at him? There's no luxury tax on that, John! :)

i would put Duquette between Ben and DD...

I liked them all, and I'd agree with your placements.

That was the year he signed Rafael Devers (August/13). That takes a bit of the sting out of the 2013 draft, doesn't it?

Has any GM whiffed so thoroughly on a draft?

I suspect they have, yes.

But why wouldn't we factor Devers into the equation? It was the same year.

It occurred to me the other day that we will finish this decade (2010-2019) having made the playoffs in only 4 of 10 seasons... in the era of 2 wild card spots to boot. Granted, two of those years resulted in championships, so it's still hard to complain too much, but I'd love to see us get out of the recent pattern of boom-and-bust cycles and build a consistent, sustainable winner once again. There's a lot of work to do to get to that point, so hopefully our new GM/POBO arrives ready to work on day one and with a few tricks up his (or her) sleeves...

Yes, DD in 2017.

Dubon, Asuaje, Martin & Speier=/> Houck, Brannen, Thompson & Netzer

Just bring me rings, baby.

I'm okay with a few bust years, if I know we are building up for the next ring in the not-so-distant future.

Too soon to tell. Let’s revisit 2017 in 2023 to have an apples to apples comparison to 2013.

Why is the international draft separate?

It's a separate thing, and it's not a draft.

It is, however, evidence of a GM who knows how to acquire some excellent young talent (Devers & D Hernandez that "off year").

There is nothing worse than watching an overpaid and over the hill team fight to be "competitive" when you know that the team isn't building towards s***. That was 2013 for me. Sox win a title, Yanks fade and it was pretty obvious that we were gonna ride the Mo and Jeter goodbye tour while having guys on the team performing far below their contracts and no brewing talent to speak of. It really, really sucks. Even when the sox were a last place team, they clearly had young talent that was building. We didn't. We had a piece that ended up still being good for our current run (like Gardner) but for the most part we were a retread team of overpaid guys not living up to their contracts.

Well said, but sometimes you have to fall on the sword for guys like Mo and Jete.

To some extent. But having a .240 hitter with lost power and on base skills hitting second for a whole season really kills your mojo. Having him play SS when he couldn't get to balls anymore was also pretty problematic. But the team around him sucked anyway, so it didn't matter. At least Mo looked like he could play another couple seasons when he left

That’s right. It is separate. When the draft classes are, discussion of the international draft isn’t part of the evaluation.

Imagine if Nomar had taken the $15 million for 4 years deal ... do we still win in 2007?
