Not much of a comp. Showalter's mistake was waiting till he had a lead to use his closer.

No it's much the same not using his best available pitcher in a crucial game situation tied in the 11th with one of the most feared hitter at the plate in Encarnacion with 2 runners on BOOM goes the season. Cora chose to not play one of his best players in Bogaerts and the Red Sox lost by one run nobody will ever know if that decision would've changed the outcome of the game. I know the chances of winning the games surely increases with Bogaerts in the line up versus not being in it.

If fans had their way, the best players would never have a day off until the team either clinches or is eliminated.

Betts, Bogey and Devers have had very limited rest days this year. They are all among the leaders in games played.

maybe so. perhaps last night wasnt the best night to sent X-bo?

A while back I posted the number of games each of these guys has missed. As of now, the Sox have played 145 games. Betts has played in 143, starting 141. Bogaerts has played in and started 139 (IIRC, he has gotten 1 game off each month of the season). Devers has played in 141, starting 137. At least a couple of his misses and games not started were when he had that hamstring issue.

Let's not pretend these guys are getting a game off a week. And anyone who thinks travel days are days off is an idiot.

The year's over as far as making the postseason. No need to begrudge any player a day off now, especially those three.

Don't worry the boys will have plenty of rest after Sept 29 it's not like the Red Sox has the luxury of dropping any games if they were planning to try and make it to the postseason.. Personally I think the Red Sox have already scrapped this season along with plenty of uncertainty in the front office. Is this a repeat of the 2011 melt down minus the beer and chicken.

It's a nasty meltdown but it's not nearly as bad as 2011. In 2011 a supposed super-team blew a huge lead. 2019 is basically just a s*****, disappointing season, on the heels of a championship.

I have said it elsewhere in the forum and provided rational for it. Won't provide the my rational again here but just to say it in the "Fire" thread, I would not fire Cora.

Is it even a meltdown?

This team never really got going. It’s been a season long funk

I'm concerned that the same people will be back neck years sans DD and we are likely to repeat this lackluster year.

I don't think the entire team is goig to be broken down and sold off and all the coaches fired and stripped naked, painted purple, and released running wild in the streets, if that's what you mean.

And there is no reason. The team is disappointing. But it's not a bad team. We're not one step above the Orioles here...

You learn a lot more about your team when they go through spells like this than when everything is wonderful. Once again I'm not that guy who is always clamoring for someone to blame and possibly to fire but ultimately the way these guys are playing right now directly relates to what they and their coaches are made of. It isn't easy to be super excited for a game when you know it is over but that is what the good ones do. Most of you know how I feel about Chris Sale. i think having a healthy Chris Sale on the roster is a necessity for this team. he is a tough as they come. I think that it is time for this group to toughen up. Pride is important.

Miracle is a great movie (I was a sperm during gametime so I can't speak about the game itself). I can respect not giving up until it's over, but the difference between the Sox now and that historic game is that the USA and Soviets started the game 0-0, whereas Boston is currently down by 9 goals in the 3rd period. Maybe they can bring Eruzione in to play second base!

It would be foolish to suggest that the Sox still have a reasonable shot . However , crazy things do sometimes happen. Last night the A's closer blew a game against the lowly Royals . The Rays have some tough games ahead . Cleveland has been very iffy . The pressure is on all of them . It would be shocking if the Sox got back in the race , but it would not be the biggest upset of all time either .

I would think that probability-wise, catching two teams while down 9 games with 13 to go would be one of the most improbable comebacks of all time in all sports. Even trying to lookup their odds, it comes up as 0.0%. They're not technically eliminated but math says you have a better shot at winning the Pick4.

9 games out with 13 to play would be the greatest comeback of all time. The Marlins once came back down 7 1/2 games with 17 to play, but that's the closest I can think of...

I think the Phillies once blew a 6.5 game lead with 12 to go, with the forever snake-bitten Gene Mauch as manager.

The 2006 Astros were 8.5 games out with 12 to play and managed to get it down to 1/2 game with 3 games left, but just couldn't finish it off. They ended the season 1.5 games behind St. Louis.

They did help themselves by sweeping the Cardinals in a 4 game series along the way...

Now that really is a troll post.

Big time.

If you were a billy goat, he'd be trying to get you under his bridge to be his meal...

It's called unnecessarily stating the obvious.

When an adversary repeatedly posts negative stuff...isn't that the definition of trolling?

Only if the same situation is bad for the Sox but beneficial when it happens to the Yankees...
