They rushed him back after one inning of rehab. Don’t take their decision to make him the closer so literal. No one said he would jump into the role on Day One...

so theres this...

Boston Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, currently on the injured list with an elbow injury, will be used as the team's closer as soon as he is able to return to the mound. Sources have indicated that Eovaldi will be used as, "a traditional closer," meaning he won't just be part of the committee the Red Sox have been using most of the season.

Well, where’s that quote from?

At the very least, itseems like they called him up before he was ready - after 1 rehab inning.

After his first outing, don’t you think they should take a little time giving him softer landing spots? Or do you think they should ignore that outing and just drop him into high leverage innings solely because they said they would?

me? i think he should be a starter. DD & Cora said he would be high leverage, "traditional" closer role right from the jump.

Me? if he is being demoted to the pen then I would 100% ramp him up with some low to mid leverage outings before declaring him our "closer". but then again, i am no Manager or President of Baseball Operations.

I believe they moved him to the pen because it would take too long to get his strength up to take a starters role this year. Better something from him than nothing. Next year is a different story where he may well be seen as a starter.

And that's as it should be be.

No doubt. I am not the least bit calm during a game. I suspect that I am not the most pleasant person to watch a game with. :)

Dombrowski and Cora say a lot of things one day, then go back on what they say the next week. Chavis not playing 2B is one of them.

I do not disagree that Porcello and the 5th spot have been the biggest problems in our rotation. However, they are not the only problems. Sale, Price, and ERod do not get free passes just because Porcello is doing worse.

Our pen needs help. Regardless of the whether we get pen help or not, we will not play sustained winning ball without improvement from the rotation.

We need Porcello to straighten himself out and for Cashner to competently fill the 5 th spot. If those 2 things happen, the starting rotation should be fine. I see no such possibility for the bullpen to be fine without an infusion of talent unless Eovaldi becomes Bruce Sutter.

I'm with you, and even if Eovaldi becomes the next Koji, we could still use a solid set up man.

So far, so bad for Eovaldi. This is an experiment, not a solution.

They rushed him back and he's ramping up in real games. Cora doing a good job getting him into games. Hopefully he'll get sharp and be a big help the rest of the way.

Eavoldi is a long way from being the guy we saw in the WS. He was a tragic mistake contract wise, unfortunately, but got to make the best of it. He has to start by actually throwing an inning without getting torched.

I don't see a problem with this. He hasn't looked great in the pen, he is going to be here next year as a starter (Cashner will not be here). Might as well move him back into the rotation and let him accumulate some innings before the season is over. The Red Sox need Eavoldi to come back strong next season.

I am 1million percent for Nate to be a starter. I am perturbed about the absolute BS from dd and wtf.

Does it matter? 41 games left, very little chance at any Play-off spot. Sox goal should be 88 wins, and call it a season. At least stay over .500.

The less wins the better draft pick.

I'm not for trying to lose games, but let the kids play and see what happens.

that the President of Baseball Operations and the Manager of the team straight up LIE to the fanbase? yeah, it matters to me.

I would rather have them say nothing.

It is dumb.

The story about moving him to the pen intimated that the starter workload was too much for his elbow....

I'm not sure these flip-flops fall under the category of lying. If they are, it's really s***** lying.

It’s not a lie. It’s that he changed his mind.

Now he might be changing to a stupid idea. But that’s not the same as lying...

No it didn’t. It was a way to try and get him back on the field and contribute faster. It would have taken him a month to build up his arm and ramp up to starters innings (ala spring training for most teams). He still would not have been there. It didn’t seem to work , but I don’t think it was because of any possible elbow issues.

Things change in baseball everyday- sometimes in minutes.

We don't know the whole story.

thats why i said "then dont say anything at all".

why...why announce that the second he can get on the mound he will be our closer. our traditional closer? and then never even come close to doing that. we are Boston Red Sox fans. do not try and placate us with meaningless words and misdirection. if players need surgery...they need surgery. if you dont want to spend resources to get a closer....dont tell me eovaldi is the closer.
