Andrew Cashner the guy who can't strike anyone out .Oh that's the guy who's going to put us over the top .Why Bother ? We have a guy who can't strike anyone out his name is Steven Wright .What a shittttty ass decision .unless there's another move .Andrew Cashner is a 5 starter when we needed a number 3 to take Porcello spot and move Rick to 5 .We still have chips for a bat and Reliever .I hope I'm wrong . Been keeping an eye on that Prado kid on DSL 2, liked him. Hope it don't hurt in about 4 or 5 years.

Maybe this guy ends up doing well, but I knew some quality pitchers could be had without trading a top prospect like Casas or Dalbec.

I usually do not like rental deals, but this looks good.

Baltimore is even paying some of the money.

Dombrowski noted that Cashner has altered his pitch this season, virtually eliminating his sinker from his repertoire and producing improved velocity.

According to Sean McAdams, the O's will pay 1.8 million of approximately his 3.5 salary he has left, and most of any performance bonuses Cashner can earn.

The O's really liked these 2 kids, heavily Scouted.

Yeah, if we see them in the majors, it won't be before 2025. They are in I don't give a s*** territory.

Cashner is 9-3 with A sub 4 ERA and averages 6 innings per start for the effing Orioles. I know W-L isn’t that important but the O’s have won like 30 games all year. Who cares if he doesn’t strike people out, he’s getting opponents out at a pretty decent rate.

Now all the Sox need to do is fix the guy at the front of the rotation...

Seriously, wtf is going on with Chris Sale? It’s not the velo. He showed an elite command through 11 games this season.

What’s going on?

The handful of Spot Starters headed by Velazquez, have a 6.76 ERA, and have averaged 3.1 innings a start in the 5th spot.

I sure hope your right .I feel if this is the only move why bother .

So who goes to make room? Velazquez or Wright would seem to be the leading candidates,

Velasquez has options, but who is off the 40 man?

My top candidates are Ryan Weber, Josh Smith, and Joey Curletta. Weber and Smith are both extremely likely to clear waivers if the Sox want to resign either...

I'd send Walden down, but Velazquez could use some work.

Off the 40 man? There's 5-6 guys I could care less about... that's how bad our depth is.

Next up, trade out-of-options Johnson plus a far-away prospect for a prospect with options.

Then, try to dump Nunez and/or Pearce plus cash to free up a tiny bit of money.

Maybe find a RP'er for something similar to what we gave up for Cashner.

Do it soon, and if we're not in the race in 2 weeks, consider blowing it all up.

I would love to see the back of both of them , but Nunez and his -1.2 WAR and Pearce ( -0.6 WAR ) appear almost immovable

If we paid all but $500K of Nunez's deal, we could probably trade him for a long shot single A prospect. Pearce will not be back in time for the deadline, so he's got no time to prove any trade stock value.

This was a smart move from DD. Stay under the threshold and get a guy who reliably takes the mound every fifth day. He’s getting lucky this season as his peripherals show he’s more a 4.5-4.7ERA guy, but you take it. If he goes 6 and gives up 3-4 runs per game, you take it every time. His acquisition cost was nothing really.

They can dump Nunez and Pearce, but I don’t think they can save any money doing so....

Moving Pearce seems rather senseless anyway.

Sox will pull a Thornburg on Pearce. He'll accept the assignment though. I would, unless another team grabs him.

It was a good move. Dombrowski got a much needed 5th starter and was presumably able to stay under the tax limit without giving up much in the way of prospects.

The Sox just need to hope that Cashner doesn't turn into a pumpkin before the end of the season. He is way outperforming his peripherals, which is not sustainable.

The trade was a good one for the Red Sox but ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Andrew Cashner with rest-of-season ERA of 5.05. 4.99 and 5.02:

Cashner needs 90.2 innings for 2020 contract to vest.

He should make about 13 starts, so that’s about 7 IP/start.

Possible but not likely.

And if he does average 7IP/start, the Sox should accept that contract option with open arms and songs in their heart...
