Home Opener - WS Ring Ceremony

Ring Ceremony 1:00 pm

First Pitch 2:05 pm

Matt Shoemaker 2-0/ 0.00

Became the 5th player in club history to make consecutive scoreless starts of at least seven innings with at least seven strike outs. Has not allowed any runs over the last 14 innings while scattering four hits and striking out 15/

Chris Sale 0-2/ 8.00

Pitched with the lowest average velocity (89.3 mph) in his last start allowing 3 hits and one run over six.

Shoemaker has been really good in his first two starts. Thankfully, the Jays only have two hitters currently batting over .200

WIN!!!

I’m hoping to see a good start from Sale. I’m going to become concerned if Sale struggles and Sox drop a game to a bad team at home, on ring day.

Red Sox pitching coach Dana LeVangie, in discussing Sale's dialed-back delivery and velo (as outlined in this story from last week): "He’s over that. His body is a precision-type body. It wants to work. His arm works fast. His body’s gonna work fast. We’ll get that back."

In other words, LeVangie anticipated the start of a more aggressive delivery (even if not necessarily max effort yet) that would generate a velocity bump on Tuesday.

Keys to success

Sale pitches good and keeps the game scoreless

Get at least 1 run more than the Jays

With these 2 secret keys, we should win this game.

Rocking a WS Champs hoodie on top of a Benintendi t-shirt since it is a little raw in New England today. Let's do this. Feels like a second opening day. The last 11 games don't count

Thank God that western road trip is over and the RS don't have to face this brutal 70-80 degree spell we're suffering from now.

Today's revelation that Chris Sale was dealing with a stomach bug the week leading up to his previous start -- when he averaged 89 mph with his fastball -- only adds to mystery of the Red Sox ace, a private person who lets his actions speak for themselves.

Among the 700+ players with at least 100 at-bats against the Blue Jays franchise, J.D. Martinez ranks 1st all-time in slugging % (.703), OPS (1.096), and at-bats per RBI (3.45). He has homered in 10 of his last 21 games vs. Toronto.

Here's hoping that today is the restart of Dustin Pedroia, who effectively missed the WS record win year of 2018. If he can be just average at bat and in the field, playing 4 of 6 games a week, it would be an improvement of this team's chances. Let Nunez and Holt(when ready) go back to being the utility players they were intended to be.

Interesting that it was Tzu Wei Lin that went back to Pawtucket, even with Brock on the IL. If they sent a pitcher, would it have been Erod or Thornburg or Walden?

At least it wasn't an infected bellybutton ring

They aren't sending ERod anywhere yet.

Agree. Way too early.

Interesting that the Sox will continue with 13 pitchers and 12 lineup players. Given the problems with the rotation, that continues to make sense.

Nunez gets to back up 3B, 2B, and SS. If an outfielder is injured with JDM as DH, I assume Pearce, Nunez, or Swihart can sub.

It's only April 9th. I'm not concerned about everything as long as everyone is healthy.

What I meant is that I'm concerned in the short term. Of course I believe in the long term this team will make the playoffs. But I'm more confident in the starting rotation starting to give us quality starts than I am in the offense giving us 5+ runs a night within the remainder of April.

Bad weather today, 43 degrees and rain. Better tomorrow \ thru Saturday. So, honestly, I give the Sox and Sale a pass today even though I hope the home crowd warms our guys up (and not the Jays).

Absolutely fascinating. Thanks. Cabrera was the guy who filled in after Nomar left, right?
