Betts has no natural affinity to give the Red Sox a hometown deal, because it's not his hometown. Remember, he is a player not a fan, and owes himself the best deal, not us. He has the 2018 ring, he has the MVP award and he will have the chance to show the world he is the #1 valued player of all time with a shot at a mega-contract exceeding Harper's ( who will eventually kill the Nationals chance at anything). He will keep that opportunity open and test the market. So enjoy the next 600 AB's of 2019 with Mookie .

Jesus Christ.

First, hometown deal doesn't necessarily mean you were born there.

Second, Harper signed with the Phillies.

Third, Mookie is also under control for 2020.

What exactly will a hometown deal look like moving forward? Assuming that Mookie might not sign with the Sox long term, in my opinion, is just as silly as believing that all of the people projecting what the future budget of the franchise might be are right. It is fun I guess to make all of these projections - gives us something to talk about - that is it. No one here knows unless we have someone on the inside posting.

No one knows what kind of extension offer the Sox have ever made to Betts. It might have been a 'take a shot' lowball offer for all we know.

Round these parts , we call an offer like that “shoving it up his Lester”...

Betts has literally no impetus to take an extension now beyond perceived market value. He made $10 mil last year. He’s making $20 mil this year. Even if he has a horrendous, injury plagued 2019 season, the Sox are going to hang onto him for 2020 and the lowest he can get in arb is $16 mil (20% drop from prior year). He’s essentially guaranteed to make $46 mil from 18-20 with a strong chance of something bigger in 2020. He’s now made life altering money. The next paycheck is a legacy check. It’s not just about him, it’s about the players after him. He owes it to the other players to maximize his worth. This is why you try and extend players like Beni when they have sub $1 mil deals in place and you can guarantee them a windfall in exchange for trading in a year of the FA clock.

Think about this. If you’re a professional baseball player, playing a thousand miles from your home, what does it matter if it’s in Boston, NY, Philly, Toronto, etc (outside of taxes). And while yes, the amount of money is ridiculous, but the more you make during your prime, the even higher the amount you’ll have when you’re done. It’s capitalist to take the money, especially when you’re already guaranteed a ridonculous sum.

What is so crazy about my posts?

You are crazy to think that we are going to pay the guy. Benny, Bogaerts, Betts and Bradley are all up soon. You think they will pay 1 player all that money at the expense of everyone else when we already have the highest payroll in baseball (by far)???

Talk about crazy. He is gone, better to accept it now.

Want proof? We dont have a closer this year because they arent willing to go much further in terms of payroll. Instead, we have the always doomed "closer by committee" this year.

I don't think they are looking at a committee. They are just picking between Barnes and Braiser.

It worked in 2013.

WTF are you talking about?

I'm waiting with bated breath for his response. Wonder what Jimmy No Name from Sheboygan has to report on some article with "sources".

Where have you heard this?

Braiser....maybe, but he crapped his pants at times at the end of last season, probably due to the fact he was pitching almost everyday when they realized he was their only solid option out of the pen (outside of SP's).

Barnes....No...No.....he will literally need a change of pants between the 7th inning and 9th inning if we have a lead and there is a possibility the game hangs on his shoulders. He just doesnt have the right makeup for it.

Oh give me a break.

Its the truth and you know it.

I didn't want Kimbrel back, and you probably didn't either, but Id be more confident if they would just name a closer rather than saying "closer by committee".

My intention wasn't to be negative about Braiser, I think he can do it.....I was just stating the reality of what happened to him at the end of last year.

Brasier pitched consistently great. Not sure what you're thinking of.

He must be bummed out by his 8.2 playoff IP'd.

1.35 WHIP & 5.2 BB/9

The 1.04 ERA apparently doesn't count.

His last 8 IP of the regular season don't count either:

1.13 ERA

.254 OPS against

Last 22.2 IP of 2018 Regular Season

1.59 ERA

.471 OPS against

I looked at those numbers. Maybe I was thinking of someone else, but for some reason, I thought that Brasier struggled at the end of the year. If i am wrong, I have no problem admitting that.

Question though, if he was so great at the end of the year and in the postseason, why not just name him the closer?

It was .499 (1.64 ERA) before 8/5/18.

Maybe they already have.

In 2019, with social media and all the ********, we'd know this by now.

Why don't we know the 2 catchers yet?

Should I look to Facebook or Istagram or what for the answer.

Yes. You would see they have already said they are looking to unload one of their catchers. Seems like Leon is your binky though. You should get used to the fact he may be the odd man out.

I know he may be the one.

I think Sale & Price are with me on this one.

Not necessarily. Especially if they held off announcing it due to Brasier’s lingering yet minor health issue...
