Eovaldi has dominated us this season. Using Porcello kept you from having to use any other shitbag reliever for 2 outs in a game you won by a run. Cannot really complain there. You need to take 1 game. If any of you were asked about your level of happiness at a Game 5 in Boston with Sale on the mound, I think most of you would take it

If it goes 5, I think Sale takes the Red Sox to the next round. Problem is, the Yankees don't lose at home very much and could definitely win the next two.

Eric Van posted this:

Severino from 7/7 to 9/5:

GS: 11; IP: 55.3; ERA: 6.83

Price from 7/20 to 9/12:

GS: 9; IP: 57.7; ERA: 1.56

------------------------------

Severino from 9/12 to present:

GS: 4; IP: 21.7; ERA: 1.6

Price from 9/19 to present:

GS: 3; IP: 12.0; ERA: 7.50

In other words, Severino slumped at the right time; Price slumped at the wrong time. With Severino returning to ace-form, the Red Sox are going to have a hard time winning on Monday. Porcello is a bit of a wild card on Tuesday, but so is Sabathia. I could see the Yankees taking out Sabathia at the first sign of trouble, turning it into a bullpen game. They will do whatever it takes to keep the series from returning to Boston for a game 5.

I'm back to the "do whatever it takes to generate offense" mentality. That means Leon and Vazquez don't start at C.

My lineup for tonight against Severino:

Betts CF

Benintendi LF

Moreland DH

Martinez RF

Pearce 1b

Bogaerts SS

Devers 3b

Swihart C

Holt 2b

(1) Devers doesn't hit Severino -- 0 for 12, 5 ks -- but he showed better patience and power in Sept. I'm giving him a chance.

(2) Bradley doesn't hit Severino -- 12 ks in 25 ABs, .200 BA, .533 OPS

(3) Holt doesn't hit Severino, but Kinsler doesn't either.

(4) Bogaerts doesn't hit Severino -- I dropped him to the 6th spot in the order.

(5) The Red Sox's best hitters against Severino: Benintendi, Martinez, Moreland, Pearce.

If we take game 3, then game 4 will definitely be a pen game. Then again, if we lose game 3, it will absolutely be a pen game. With a day off after it, should we go to a game 5, he’ll pull CC at the first sign of any difficulty. Sevy wasn’t necessarily “ace-like” in the WC game, but his stuff was good. I’d like to see a more aggressive approach out of him. Once he got a lead, he stopped throwing the ball in the zone and made the A’s chase. It worked, but only because our pen is really really good

I think game 3 is a must win game for the Yankees. If they lose game 3, little chance to win two in a row with Sabathia in game 4 and then against Sale in Boston for game 5.

In contrast, the Red Sox can lose game 3 and still win the series.

I think it is as close to a must win as a non elimination game can be. We need to set the tone at home and keep the stadium rocking.

In the other hand, if the Yanks win today the pressure will be all in the Sox side.

If this does happen, and the Sox win in NY, in a elimination game, they won't lose in Boston. Yanks have to end it in NY. I'll take the Sox in a game 5 in Boston.

Agree with you the best for the Yanks is to end it in NY, but Sale needs to go at least 6 or 7 for you guys, if not your BP will be under a lot of pressure, even in Boston

The odds of the Yankems winning this ALDS would be the same odds as seeing a POTUS mounting the steps of Air Force 1 with a sheet of toilet paper stuck to his shoe. Things like that just don't happen in the great ol' USA. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Actually, I believe it was a 50-50 chance at the start of the series. Now, technically, based on history, we are looking at a 37% chance. LOL Home teams who split the first two games have won the series 37% of the time.

But this is the postseason. And these are the Boston Red Sox. Throw those numbers out the window!

It could be worse; it could be 36% of the time.

I love that quote.

And it almost perfectly describes my perspective. I became a Sox fan in 1949 and so endured 55 years of the 86 year curse, so I claim to come by my pessimism honestly and am all the more delighted when I am wrong.

That said, the more recent discussion on this thread is a heckuva more interesting than my moaning and groaning. In fact, you said something especially apt--this is now a 3 game series, pure and simple.

Sandy Leon has 4 hits and 2 talks since August ninth. He is such a bum. I know his defense is useful but he contributes a permanent .000 spot in your order.

Leon basically produces an out every single time the order turns over, bringing up the Red Sox's best hitters. Thus, Leon not only sucks as a bottom of the order hitter, his ineptness impacts the ability of the top of the order to produce runs.

Leon essentially turns the Red Sox offense into a national league offense, not a great situation when you are trying to beat the Yankees in a short series.

The surprising part of this extended slump by Leon is that we have seen him capable of hitting, even if at the .220 level. It seems when Vaz went out his offensive game died, but he has had plenty of time since early September to get his legs back under him and hit a few balls. He would have walked more if he had just NEVER taken the bat off his shoulder. A lot of bad pitches swings in this futile streak. certainly the defense has saved a few runs, and likely saved Game 1 for sure, but each guy in an AL lineup needs to contribute some pressure on the pitcher.

Head scratcher. Of the 4 remaining teams in the PO's the team that had the most regular season wins has arguably the weakest starting pitching and the weakest BP. Is it really just smoke and mirrors?

Over? Not even close. I think we will win tonight with Eovaldi on the mound. We probably lose tomo, and we win it in Fenway with Sale on the mound. I’m sure we win at least one game in NY and finish them in Fenway.

You never know Severino can get shaky and it’s a big stage tonight. I know he did well in the wildcard game, but hopefully he’s very hitable tonight. We have to make him make his pitches and not chase pitches out of the strike zone.

If we get past Yanks it’s going to be hard, because the Astros are looking really good right now. The Guardians have a really good lineup and they can’t score hardly any runs against that pitching staff. Plus they’re hitting like they did last post season. That said all we need to do to get those bats going and get some good pitching!

For all the attention paid to players like Trout, Harper, Judge, and Betts, Alex Bregman is quietly becoming one of the best players in baseball...

He is by far our best catcher when Sale and Price are starting. There should be no debate.

Nobody was saying this after game 1.

They just beat the Guardians 11-3 in Cleveland. The Guardians are no joke and they swept them with ease. Your right Bregman is a stud. For some reason we don’t match up well against them either, but I’m hoping this is a different year. Of course we have to get past the dam Skanks first. All we have to do is get one in NY. It would be great if we took both in NY. I just don’t like their bullpen being so dominant. Just get one and bring it back to Boston.

Alex Bregman came out of the New Mexico high school ranks the same year Blake Swihart did.

And here i thought i was one of the most negative posters. You take the cake pal! Lol. Anything is possible. This team needs to show up tonight.

Plenty of people were worried about the pitching, before the play offs and after game 1.

Personally I think we need to win tonight. I would worry about us tomorrow night behind Porcello. A quick start tonight would be very welcome. Liking the line up.

Be interesting to see what the weather conditions do to the pitching. It's a real s*** night here in NYC. Hopefully it clears up quick.
