For a player to be eligible for the postseason active roster, he must have either been on his club's expanded roster or disabled list as of midnight ET on August 31 of that year and not placed on the 60 day disabled list after August 1.[4] The one exception is for replacing players on the disabled list. Since the 2014 season, an injured player eligible for postseason play may be replaced by any player within his club's organization, including players assigned to the club's minor league affiliates who are not on the major league 40-man roster. Prior to 2014, only players who were on a club's 40-man roster (including those added to the expanded roster after August 31, who would not otherwise be eligible for the postseason) at the conclusion of the regular season were eligible to replace injured players on postseason rosters. The 2015 Kansas City Royals were the first club to exploit this new provision when they added Adalberto Mondesí—who at the time was assigned to the Royals' Double-A affiliate and was not on the 40-man roster—to their World Series roster.

I'm not ready to put Philips on the postseason roster, but I love that he had this incredible experience today and that his appearance in this game shows once again that the Sox FO has a good feel for who should be given a shot. Great move by DD and Cora. At the least, one hopes that we see Phillips again this month.

Or he could just retire and walk off into the sunset after that HR.

He absolutely could, but you can bet he doesn't want to and that he is going to play more games this month.

Holy s***. Didn’t see the game looked exciting !!!!! Can’t believe we got the sweep. Atlanta is pretty damn good this year.

If there is any way, he should be considered for the playoff roster. He did many things well today.

I think if he finishes strong, he'll consider coming back next year.

They already updated his wiki:

Phillips was added to Boston's active roster on September 4[39] and made his debut with the Red Sox the following day. In that September 5, 2018 game, he hit a 2-run home run in the 9th inning to carry the Red Sox to a 9-8 victory over the Atlanta Braves, leading the team to its 97th win of the season, completing a comeback from Atlanta's 7-1 and 8-7 leads late in the game.[40]

Looked at the stats quick. Ugly day again for Poms. Eeek.

His stats are horrible, watching him pitch is something else. Dude is done.

If he even sniffs an inning in the playoffs I’ll puke.

Even if the Sox are up by a dozen runs?

Lol well maybe in that case. But playing the likes of Cleveland, Houston and New York. Chances of being up by a dozen is slim to none.

I'm not usually the one to do this, but before today, his last few outings had been very solid. No one wanted to hang Velazquez after his last start but he was awful. Today he was pretty good.

Wow! Just wow!

I'm so happy for Phillips. He stuck it out in AAA, hoping to get his chance. He got his chance, and he made the most of it.

As somebody else said, you can't make this stuff up.

Great game!

Great game. I wasn't available to watch the game live so I recorded it and just finished watching it. If this game didn't kill Atlanta, nothing will. POM s/b DFA'd asap. Waste of a position player. B. Phillips, to quote OB, went from 0 to hero. Great debut and he can play 3rd base, if needed. No quit on this team as was amplified in today's great comeback. Btw, nice piece of hitting by Beni to set up Phillips' dinger.

The only way Pomeranz sees the mound is if the Sox are DOWN by a dozen runs and he can save the rest of the pen (ala Wakefield in Game 3 in 2004).

2018 bat flip of the year!

I watched Atlanta TV including the after the game show. The manager, announcers and players all were saying it was their worst loss of the year but that have to regroup and move on. They are now in a tight pennant race with the Phillies and have to bounce back.

As I've mentioned, I've always been a big Brandon Phillips fan, I love the way he plays and he loves the game. That game winning homer today was awesome. Great win.
