Barnes has obviously struggled lately, but there are some signs of life. His BABIP is unsustainably high, and most of his problems have clear fixes. He should be able to figure it out down the stretch

Unfortunately, the signs of life are in the baseball after it hits the hitters bats.

He struggles massively under pressure. I was at a game at Fenway in July and we were up 6-2 on the Bluejays. Barnes came in and I said it’s about to get interesting. Sure enough he gave up 2 runs and was pulled before getting any outs. Nothing’s changed since then. He’ll have an occasional good outing then just give it up the next couple times out. It’s not a comfortable thought of our bullpen going into the playoffs.

Can't even comment here, since I have expressed my uninformed eyeball opinion on Barnes's ability to to get guys out consistently. He does have ability but can't figure out his inconsistency or inefficiency factor.

The bullpen has also been seriously taxed with the inability of the back end starters to give innings - even Rodriguez who has been outstanding. The bullpen needed the roster expansion badly. Barnes has suffered - but a lot of that could be fixed just by having help besides Brasier.

When the starters don't give the team the innings that they need to, the bullpen becomes less effective. Having our starters healthy and effective will have a trickle down impact on our relievers.
