POM couldn't have hand-chosen a better club to re-start his season. It's quite possible POM faced tougher line-ups in Triple-A. Anyway, let's all hope for the best and if things don't start well for POM, then maybe the rain will bail the SOX out. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Drew Pomeranz vs. Yefry Ramirez

Hopefully this can be a bounce-back game for Pomeranz, the Orioles are so bad that this could be a way for him to ease back into things.

"Hopefully" is the operative word. I met someone once who wrote a book entitled, "Hope Is Not a Method." But long-time Sox fans know that sometimes it's all we got. Well, and Velazquez of course. And rain. Here in DC we have lots of that and it ain't going away.

Hopefully this game is able to get in. The forecast the next two days is very iffy. It's literally been pouring down rain, the sun comes out for 20 minutes, pours again, and repeats, plus its absurdly humid. Miserable weather right now.

My coworker's son drove all the way to Baltimore for this game. It's his first Sox game too. If they lose tonight, I'll have to fire his mom. That's just the rules.

1. Mookie Betts ® RF

2. Andrew Benintendi (L) LF

3. J.D. Martinez ® DH

4. Mitch Moreland (L) 1B

5. Xander Bogaerts ® SS

6. Jackie Bradley Jr. (L) CF

7. Eduardo Nunez ® 2B

8. Rafael Devers (L) 3B

9. Blake Swihart (S) C

Swihart gets the nod behind the dish to catch Pom.

This is a good test for both parties.

That would stink if the game gets rained out.

Probably even worse if he has to sit through a couple hour long rain delays.

Pomeranze) When does Wright get back!

Wright is not expected back anytime soon.

ERod sounds hopeful that he will be back sooner rather than later.

Kimmi. My experience with guys going out with ankle sprains, especially those with some tearing, will be in a boot for a long period, maybe 6 weeks, and then a pitcher will need to get back to throwing effectively. I hope he get back soon but my guess is he will be out for most if not all of August.

This start is huge. We could use a healthy and effective Pom in the rotation.

Healthy, maybe. But effective? Not likely.

It looks like the start of this game might be delayed for well over an hour, but around 8:30 to 9:00 it looks like no rain for quite awhile. But these monsoon rains are hard to figure. We should get the game in, tho, unless the field is a total mess from earlier downpours.

Since pitching depends heavily on leg strength and endurance several weeks in a boot won't allow a quick rehab and re-entry to mid season form. Maybe a mid September return to spell one of Price's, Sale's or Porcello's starts ???

Gary Sanchez on 10-day disable list. Is this to cover his ass or to punish him?? Take a guess. But probably both motives are in place.

True, but I think there are leg exercises that don't involve the feet, or at least the one ankle. And originally i heard the boot was only 15 days. Has this been lengthened?

I think it makes sense that his groin was still bothering him. If not, to have not just one but two no-hustle plays in one game, especially for a team that's under the hot lights like the Yankees (or us), you'd have to be in some sort of self-destruct mode.

Woot!

Here's a follow on to that : With 71 wins in 102 games , only the Orioles 73 loses come close numerically to the Sox wins, with the Royals pressing at 69 for that dubious distinction. The closest win total is the Astros 66 in the same 102 games. No National league team has won more than 58, being Theo/Maddon's Cubs. The least games played is 97 ( Braves and Mets). Even if Atlanta won all 5 of that differential they would only be at 59 wins. If the Yankees get some blind luck and win all 4 of the current differential they will have 67 and still be 4 back.

The Red Sox are just not currently the winningest team in MLB they are well clear of their closest followers. Enjoy it for what it is, an incredible regular season .

I just hope the weather is nothing like last night. That was like Florida weather. Starts raining and in less than a minute its a downpour. That will not be a good weather circumstance for Pom, a guy just making his first start back up. He needs the weather to hold off.

It is likely going to be similar tonight and tomorrow. I live in MD and the weather has been awful the past few days and the rain you are describing has been very common.

Oh my God look at those stands. I know the weather is bad. But Holy Cow.

There were those years in the early and mid-60s when black and white TV telecasts were just lighting up. We often refer to them fondly as "the Horace Clark years". They were the years after the great Yankee team years when the league had really just been a farm team for the MFY's. Then came the Horace Clark years and they were pitiful. If the Yankees were pitiful at that time you can imagine what everybody else was. If you were a kid then and did not have the experience of the glory years of baseball you could easily convince yourself that nobody really went to baseball games. "Everybody must be watching on TV" because there was nobody in the ballparks and you loved baseball. So the gate can't be a reflection on the game. Everybody must love baseball. In truth it was a very very bad time and almost killed MLB. Average attendance around 10k fans. So you can just imagine what some of those parks looked like if the average across everybody and every game was 10k! some of those games struggled to get 3k people in the gate.
